Agreed (and I'm autistic too). There's been a bit of a push away from diagnosing ASDs lately, with the whole perception that they're overdiagnosed. Unfortunately, that means that people sometimes go undiagnosed instead. I'd look up diagnostic criteria (look up the DSM-V criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder, not one of the older ones), see if his behaviour is a possible match, and if it is, document it and seek a second opinion.
