I really liked them as a couple, because dammit, can't there just be some lust-only relationships on television? They gave a damn about each other but weren't in love, and they decided to have sex. IT'S THE BEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN.

(While we're on the subject, though, it will annoy me forever that Spartacus never truly moved on from Sura. Geesh, Gannicus fell in love again, and the character development between Gannicus and Melitta made the angst WAY MORE JUSTIFIED than Spartacus's sadness over Sura. I think Sura had, like, a dozen lines tops, most of them in flashbacks. And one was just a scream.)

That's more of a gripe on the show not developing Sura's character at all and fridging her though. Gannicus' angst is no more justified than Spartacus', but we got to see Melitta and Gannicus' relationship so we know why he cared for her, not so much with Sura and Spartacus.

I have no problem with Sura. Yes, the audience never really gets to know her, so we never really understand on a deeper level why Spartacus was so smitten with her. BUT I think the audience is supposed to understand that for most people there exists that one person who is loved above all others, who makes life worth living, and who you would be entirely lost without. We're just supposed to enter into the show with the assumption that this is the type of bond that Spartacus and Sura have.

I always had a hard time relating to the character change that Spartacus undergoes... switching from SuraSuraSura mode to being able to start any kind of relationship (whether physical or whatever) with Mira or Laeta. I think if my One Person was gone, that part of me would just shrivel up and die forever. But then that's just me.

Maybe I would have bought the transformation a bit more if it hadn't occurred at that pivotal moment between two actors. I'm sure it would have read much more seamlessly if by some glorious miracle we'd had Andy Whitfield for all three seasons.

I think the show definitely tried to point out that Spartacus wasn't really in love with Mira, though. She certainly seemed to be with him though, and while I don't doubt he cared for Mira he definitely didn't love her, at least not to the same degree as Sura. And considering the amount of weight that Spartacus was under, I don't think I'd blame him for seeking comfort where he could, though he did lead Mira on :/

Maybe it's because I absolutely hated the Gannicus/Melitta storyline, but I don't think that it's comparable with Spartacus/Sura. Sura was his wife and his heart, and even though we didn't get to see her, he makes it clear time after time that she was the person who mattered most in the world to him.
Gannicus, while his feelings for Melitta may have been genuine, developed them after they were forced to have sex with each other, and they were 'together' for only a short period of time.

Regarding the secret, though, I too had a special spot for Spartacus/Laeta, if only because they had mad chemistry and didn't even pretend to have ~romantic~ feelings for each other.
