Misled by the synopsis. Also, book recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I'm about 75% done the "Way of Shadows" by Brent Weeks and I am just so FRUSTRATED with it! I thought I was going to be reading about a bloodthirsty killer making his living as an assassin, not crying over his supposed love interest EVERY TIME HE SEES HER, not to mention everyone else just falls flat. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?! *RAGE*

So on that note, have YOU ever been misled by a book's synopsis? Another one that comes to mind is "The Night Circus" by Erin something. Thought it would be magical. It was magically ... bad.

Also, any other recs for books with assassins where it isn't half focused on feeling guilty and making friends and feelings of love would be very much appreciated. Sometimes I just wanna read about dark characters and cold-hearted killers, you know? :S

Would hardboiled hitmen do? Because there's the Hank Thompson trilogy by Charlie Huston. Starts off with Hank doing a favor for his neighbor, babysitting his cat. Ends up with Hank being on the hitlist of every gangster and dirty cop in the city because of that favor. The books are a quick read and are bloody as anything.

These are great, great books and I strongly recommend them. But while it's definitely a lot more cold than what OP is describing, Hank isn't exactly a cold-blooded heartless killer completely lacking in remorse.

god, those books rule, though

The Dresden Files (I know, I know, burn the heretic, etc etc) The first book was okay but dude, dude! If you want people to read ALL THE BOOKS in your series, I recommend NOT using The. Exact. Same. Descriptions. For. Your. Characters. In. Every. Single. Book. Ugh.

oh god the Night Circus was such a mess. And a waste of time.

I felt completely cheated by the synopsis for "Darling Jim" by Christian Mørk. That book was such a disappointment, and I ended up hating it.

Well, it's a children/teen book, but I'll rec it anyway. It's called The Thief Lord and it's by Cornelia Funke. It's an easy, quick read, so if you don't like it, it won't be like you invested a lot of time into reading it.

Here's the synopsis:

Welcome to the magical underworld of Venice, Italy. Here, hidden canals and crumbling rooftops shelter runaways and children with incredible secrets....

After escaping from their cruel aunt and uncle, orphans Prosper and Bo meet a mysterious boy who calls himself the "Thief Lord." Clever and charming, the Thief Lord leads a band of street children who enjoy making mischief. But the Thief Lord also has a dark secret. And suddenly Proper and Bo find themselves on a fantastical journey to a forgotten place. What they discover there will change the course of their destiny.

Sounds like your feelings about that book are the same as mine. It was just a miserable mess where I hated everyone involved. I would much rather have read about the trials and tribulations of being an exceptional assassin who gets caught up in intrigue.

Only thing I could recommend in that vein was an anthology of quality assassin short stories I used to read all the time before I lost my copy, Assassin Fantastic. All kinds of unique killers in that one, very little whining about it between them, and several stories are connected to longer novels, like Tanya Huff's assassin duo from her novel Fifth Quarter.

If you do manage to find one, please let me know. I'm fed up with the assassin with a heart of gold trope, the assassin for justice trope, and the assassin with a traaaagic past trope. I just want to read about a heartless bastard, for once.
