obvious troll here, but I did talk to a Rose stan who felt this way. they were all "ugh ew River is gross, the Doctor is still in love with hot young 19-yr-old Rose, River is disgusting" and I was like "are you even serious"

Rose/Doctor stans need to calm their shit down xDDD

"Stan" for a fan comes from the Eminem song about a psychopathic fan by that name. Might have gotten diluted in some circles, but a lot of people are going to assume you're talking about someone who's veering into the scarily obsessive territory if you use that term because of the origin.

they probably mean just the REALLY weird stans that insist literally everything on the show is a reference to Rose. Still. idk, there are a ton of Rose/Doctor fans that are just fine. i doubt anyone thinks they are ALL like that O___o

lol. I definitely don't think that everything in the show is a reference to Rose (e.g. I don't think "Hungry Like the Wolf" was a Rose reference), but I think it's pretty harmless to make Rose connections. So it's just kind of funny to me that people have gotten SO mad about it that someone made a tumblr mocking people making Rose connections.

eh. as an ooold fan of DW it does annoy the shit out of me that people can't get over ONE companion. Rose was lovely but holy shit it's not The Rose Show. the Doctor will not live the rest of his life pining for her and making references to her. and the ones who think the Doctor can never love anyone else, after or even before Rose? that's just asinine

Very few people think that the Doctor can never love anyone else. Many of my Doctor/Rose shipping friends are getting on board the Doctor/Clara train.

But it's not bad to have a favorite character. And it is kind of fun looking for potential references. E.G. the plot of the two creatures separated by universes in "Hide" could easily be seen as a Rose reference and it's just a bit of fun.

But the companions are not there (or never have been there) for the Doctor to love/fawn over/get wangsty over, they were there to get in trouble/get out of trouble/help the Doctor save the day (or not), and to contrast just how very not human the Doctor is to begin with. (Please note, I disagree completely with Moffat's choice to turn all of his protagonists into psychopaths.) That was what really highlighted the fact that he was actually an alien. Which isn't that strange, on a science fiction show.

Ever since Eight, it's just been one over-extended, over the top space opera, IMO.

... The Doctor has been losing people to/picking people up from parallel universes at least since E-space back in the Fourth Doctor era.

However, given how relatively recent it was for him, I'm guessing Rose probably was on the Doctor's mind.

It's been over two hundred years at this point. That's really not recent, even for the Doctor.

Okay, better example: the Doctor telling Clara, "You remind me of someone. Someone who died." Okay, he's obviously talking about Oswin and Victorian!Clara. That much is readily apparent. However, there were STILL people who decided he was talking about Amy (semi-fair enough, that actually WAS recent for him, and she actually did die), or... Rose. It's ridiculous.

The thing that really annoys me about that is that if you are only thinking of actors ages, Eccleston is easily older than Billie Piper by more than Alex Kingston and Matt Smith.

Then again I suppose they think it's OK because older women are gross but older men not.
