fat folks on tv generally don't get to be good at much other than cooking. maybe lawyering. it's a running joke on archer that everyone is considered disgusting or undesirable for some reason, so that's pretty much a zero sum game. pam doesn't give a shit and just does her amazing shit, generally without even telling anyone, and that's pretty awesome.

Seriously. I get that they have a running gag of Pam being seen eating things (sometimes to dangerous excess, like the time she was eating fake crab legs that she was allergic to), but it's no worse than the sex addiction Syril has, or the drinking that Archer constantly does, or any of a thousand other "bad" behaviors the rest of the cast has.

I don't think they really play Pam off like she's legitimately disgusting. I think her coworkers feel that way about her, but the viewer doesn't have to. Pam's awesome.

Pam eating to excess can also be largely construed as Pam not being fat-shamed by her otherwise more conventionally-sized co-workers into starving herself. She does what she wants, including eating what she wants, and even holds some of the other characters' bad habits in equal contempt (calling Cheryl "bird bones," etc.) - which, again, everyone on the show is an asshole, so it's not all that damning in comparison. Pam's eating on-screen isn't seen as an elephant in the room that the other characters politely don't talk about for fear of not being P.C. enough - Melissa McCarthy's character from Bridesmaids and Lauren Zizes' stint on Glee come to mind - but she eats (and drinks) voraciously and doesn't fucking care whether anyone else likes it or not. Also, even some of the characters who apparently think she's "legitimately disgusting" have still been entangled with her sexually. TL;DR: Pam's a breath of fresh air.

Scenes with her eating definitely plays up the "disgusting fat chick" stereotype, not to mention scenes where she talks about getting STDs, the fighting, burping and farting, etc. She's the only female character who's consistently shown naked (back view only) but always in an "ewwwww gross" way.

I never really found Pam to be disgusting. In the right light, ALL the characters in Archer are disgusting. Pam just really likes to be crass, spill secrets, and eat junk food. I'd sure as hell rather be her than Malory or Cheryl.
