laptop troubles (kinda long, soz)

[personal profile] saku 2013-04-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
idk if anybody knows enough about this to help me, but if you do then i'd appreciate it, cuz i'm at a loss.

i'm using this shitty temporary replacement laptop atm bc my other one was a defective model and the motherboard is fucked up etc so i'm stuck using this stupid thing.

it's a dell running vista home basic i think. it's got a gig of space so i'm not expecting a miracle. it's gotten pretty freaking slow lately tho. on startup the other day, i noticed the windows "welcome" screen or w/e was taking longer than usual to fuck off and load my desktop. the desktop itself - taskbar and all - was completely black for a few minutes after first being turned on.

i got a few errors after that. the first one was "could not connect to the 'system event notification service' service."

the second one has to do with my internet, and the fact that it's not finding any networks whatsoever and thus preventing me from getting online. "connection status unknown. the dependency service or group failed to start."

i've never seen either of these messages before so i checked online for possible solutions. i got a lot of suggestions to open the command prompt ad type in "netsh winsock reset" which i did. it indicated that it worked but required a restart to complete. when i restarted, the laptop crashed consistently on startup, at the welcome screen. tried it again today and it managed to load my desktop (and faster, which looked like good news to me) but then crashed again. i can't check the details of the crash report cuz it's not actually giving me the report, since it crashes before it can??? yeah.
all i know is that the error is "STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x00000000, 0x88385A48, 0x00000000)."

also, windows explorer stopped working somewhere down the line. any explorer-related thing that gets opened immediately freezes and crashes. so i can't access a number of things that are important for some of the fixes suggested online.

i tried using the SFC /Scannow prompt as well but it says "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation."

i can't run chkdsk C: bc the action won't even start (and yeah, i'm requesting it run upon startup. it just doesn't).

i've lost track of the fixes i've tried but each one is giving me some bullshit error. it's just an endless stream of errors going on forever and ever

so i'm pretty sure it's a virus. i mean it's either that or something is corrupted and just coincidentally took out every fix possible at once, but i doubt it. i do have malwarebytes, spybot and avast. avast isn't catching any viruses. spybot isn't finding anything either. malwarebytes did find a trojan, which it removed (and may explain why the laptop is much less slow than it was before this bullshit started? idk). but that's all it's finding.

i know this is long but seriously if anybody knows what the heck is happening, please let me know. this laptop isn't really worth taking into a place to have it checked out, it's legit worth like $80 so lmao no. but finals are coming up and it would be nice to have internet access outside of the computer lab, which closes at freaking midnight.

eta: with the BSOD bit, i can only fix that by booting from the last known working startup, which is the one before i applied the winsock reset. but then i'm back to everything else not working, even if the computer boots up.

I am not sure what is wrong. But I would ask the guys on bleepingcomputer.com. They have helped me fix my computer and the computers of friends and family many times. The down side is that they are slow to answer. But you will be helped.
