Why does it make them sad? Who cares if fewer people like what you like? I don't get this.

It's that fewer people write about the things they like. Therefore fewer things to enjoy, more stuff to wade through to get to stuff you'd like. It's surely not hard to grasp.

Also they may actually feel that the source material deserves more love. Again, what's the mystery about that?

There's still almost 2,000 fics there... and quantity =/= quality. Ok, so every teenager in the world isn't crazy about your favorite thing, so what

The numbers are in fact misleading: there are even fewer of the book-based works than it seems due to people tagging modern verse with bookverse presumably as an ill-conceived tribute or w/e.

Plus, once you've read them all already, quantity does become an issue.
