I bake cheddar into the crust of my apple pies. I didn't actually think it was that unusual? I'd never heard that it was a New England thing, either. I'm from the Midwest and I know quite a few people from the Midwest/South who love the apple + cheddar combo. Then again, we're all big bakers, so that might be skewing things a bit.

I dunno - it's something my dad (from MA) and his family all did, and my mom never did (from St. Louis). My SO and his family (all from MO) recoiled in horror when I mentioned it.

I don't like crust, so i just have a nice big wedge of it to eat with my pie.

Damn, i want some pie now.....

I'm actually from MO, but a rural part of central MO, which can be worlds different than STL area in my experience. So that might be part of what's at play as well. Interesting, either way!

The people who haven't tried the apple pie/cheese combo are missing out in a major way.

Damn, now I want pie, too.

I grew up in a rural part of central MO - mostly rural - but neither of my parents did. Funny how culture drift happens in weird little tendrils and pockets.

High five for a fellow rural central MO-er! It really is weird, isn't it? It was especially interesting seeing the differences when I went to college, since I went in state--the rural MO vs the St. Louis area vs the KC area kids. It made for some really interesting conversations.
