I always read him as a nod to the traditional "blank slate" video game protagonist. His interactions with Karkat are rather priceless though... well, Karkat's interactions with anyone are all rather priceless, Karkat/Karkat - of course - being the créme de la créme.

John is main-character-stupid. Which I don't like in general, but it's funny that John wrote that whole thing about the mathematical structure of the captchalogue codes way back in the beginning.
