"Because these bad things are legal!" is never a good argument to make some other bad thing legal, though. If they could have successfully kept alcohol and cigarettes illegal, they would have. :/

"Applying consistent standards" isn't a good reason? They couldn't keep alcohol illegal because Prohibition was a giant clusterfuck, and I'm not aware of any attempt to ban cigarettes.

In any case, I provided plenty of OTHER reasons. Are they acceptable?

No, and not really.

It's better to allow a black market to persist that feeds and funds organized crime syndicates responsible for the murder of countless innocent people, than it is to legalize, regulate, and tax a substance that isn't actually all that dangerous? Fascinating.

Alcohol should be legal, though. Prohibition didn't get repealed because of the difficulties of enforcement in a purely logistic sense - it got repealed because people liked drinking, even people who claimed to be dries. It got repealed, in other words, because alcohol is something that people really like, and have liked for pretty much the entirety of human history; something that's been shown to have health benefits. It's abused by some, yes, but that's not in itself an argument for banning it - we should help people who are abuse alcohol and we should discourage it and have a healthy drinking culture, but the very fact that a healthy drinking culture is something that we can conceive of goes to show that alcohol isn't inherent;y unhealthy and shouldn't be banned. There are enormous problems with alcohol consumption in this country - but if it's not bad in itself, it's something that we should try to reform, not something that we should try to ban.

Wets forever!

(and even if you think that alcohol should be illegal - the fact that prohibition proved impossible and harmful in the case of alcohol should give you pause, and the fact that weed is less harmful than alcohol means that it may be the case that alcohol should be banned and weed shouldn't)
