Pretty sure my Steam account's in the quadruple digits by now.

...

According to this my Steam account is worth $3203.98. Rough, unscientific estimates of actual money spent would probably be closer to $2000, $2500 at best, because a lot of my games are gifted or were on sale.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
How much time have you generally spent with the games you've bought? Are there any you haven't played? What's the most time you've spent on a game? Jw. because I know for me, most of the games I get on Steam (usually on sale) I never play, and then there's a few games I've played for massively long times (I have one game on my account with over 3000 hours logged (in my defense, I bought several years ago, when I was in college, and would frequently leave it running for long periods while doing other things, or overnight or what have you))

About 46% of the games I own I've never played. Fallout New Vegas has 230 hours on it. Fallout 3 would too, but I ran that through FOMM and it didn't tabulate. Actually, if it did tabulate it would probably be the clear winner, because I never ever closed FOMM and Steam listed me as being in-game for over a month.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 and both L4Ds are in the low to mid 100 hours. TF2 is 70 hours and Dark Souls is 60 hours. Everything else is well below that.

Hey, my account is only worth $789.58! I feel marginally less terrible about my spending habits now.

1,158.2 hours, though....

Mine is worth $483.68. (Actually since it seems to be counting the two Valve put into my profile as a 'hey, check this game and its discount out!' thing, that should probably actually be $476.19...)

Total paid: $0. >_> Every single game I have that isn't F2P was a gift. (Except Portal, which I got when Valve was giving it out for free a couple years ago.)

My friends who gifted me the games probably paid closer to $400, since few of them were bought for full price.

Mine is worth $1791.76, and I've played 5,506.6 hours worth of game on it. Quick estimated browse through my transaction history I can't have spent more than $700 over 4 years. I'm pretty happy with the $1000 I've saved, heh.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've done $1366, and it says 280 hours but I've actually racked up way more hours than that. I don't know why it hasn't calculated them all - for example, it has no hours listed for Bioshock or Bioshock Infinite which I've already beaten. I'm guessing that if I'm playing in offline mode it doesn't calculate those hours. (I do that a lot because my computer is funny and makes me jump through all kinds of hoops to log into my steam account, so I only do it when I need to update.)

I also don't think I've actually SPENT that much for my account, I'm big on the bundle deals and holiday specials.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you play P2W games, OP? That was my first thought. There are multiple people in the game I play now that have spent close to $10k on their character in less than 6 months...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you're financially sound, there really isn't any issue of what you spend your money on.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There can be. Hypothetically, I mean, I don't see any reason to think there's anything wrong with what OP is doing, but there could be good reasons someone could be concerned about the way someone they care about spends their money even if they're not financially at risk, for example if it's part of an addictive behavior.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. if they're helping support a family, or they have a lot of debt, them running around spending so much money might be a bad thing. and yeah, possible addiction. if all those bases are covered though, they're probably okay. it's not something i'd do with my money, but if they're able to spare the cash then whatever makes 'em happy.

Underground chinchilla fight clubs?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that's bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Why should anyone be looking at your bank statements anyway? That's really no one's business but yours. If you can afford it, good for you.

Besides, all those Steam sales make it really easy to own a gazillion games...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you folks who spend all this $$$$ on gaming aren't the ones complaining the rich don't pay enough taxes.
visp: (Default)

[personal profile] visp 2013-04-27 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If they're spending thousands of dollars on games, they probably are rich enough that it's their own taxes they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. I make the average American wage, but I'm in my twenties, with no kids, no student loans, no serious medical issues, and relatively few bills. I have close to a thousand dollars a month of disposable income, and I am by no means rich. :/

Don't worry about it?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-04-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm presuming here that when you say you have cash to spare, you mean that it really is disposable income and you're aren't sacrificing important amenities for yourself or your family to fund it.

If that's the case, and provided that this amount of money doesn't translate into being obsessed with games to the exclusion of everything else in your life, I'd say don't worry about it. Glad that you have that kind of money (and are actually paying it instead of going pirate). Though yeah, probably a good idea to keep your bank statements to yourself (then again, I grew up in an environment where everyone keeps their money matters to themselves if they can afford it, so this doesn't seem like a particularly problematic habit to me - I know this is a very different scenario for other people, so I do hope it's okay for you, OP).

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Back when I had a good paying job and no one else to support, I'd spend upwards of $500/month on anime, collectibles (dolls, dj, cards, pencil boards, etc.) for several years. I sometimes kinda think I was the person propping up the industry as when I quit that job for grad school (what a stupid choice on quitting and on grad school--can't find work, overqualified, etc.) it seemed like the bottom fell out of the industry. :)

Gaming's expensive. I've easily spent thousands of dollars on it - not over a lifetime, in the past couple of years.

That said, you know what else is a really fucking expensive hobby? Scuba diving. To buy your own gear - especially where I live where most people dry suit dive - is about $6000. Then you've got travel costs, maintenance, air, special licensing. Rentals are often $50-100 per weekend, and that's not for something like a video game that you get to keep.

I do both.

...And yet... I've never heard someone get all up in a diver's grill about wasting money...

[personal profile] rivia 2013-04-27 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah. It's kind of interesting how some hobbies are perfectly acceptable and some aren't. I collect nail polish because I just love wearing it and all the colours available nowadays. But I always get raised eyebrows about it like it's really weird. No one blinks an eye about somebody dropping thousands on restoring an old car as a hobby, or as you say, scuba diving, but spend maybe $100-200 a year on nail polish? "Oh shit why are you wasting your money on something like that, you hoarder!"

Make-up is feminine and therefor ~frivolous~ and gaming is ~juvenile~ I suppose

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-04-27 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
What's ironic about that is most people probably spend more on seeing the movies than $100-200.

That's, uh, really useful right there.

If it's your money and you don't have a problem, why is your statement your parent's business anyway?
