Not me :( I'm sad she died by Caesar's hand.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
But it's so much better than if some random foot soldier killed her. We all know that Caesar eventually gets HIS... just retcon the hell out of history and say that Brutus orchestrated the bringdown of Caesar on account of rabid Naevia-fanboying.

/ new headcanon now

Because of Varro?

Urg, this show made me hate Caesar so fucking much... I wish she could've stabbed him (non-fatally, obviously) in the stomach or something. (Well...okay, I would've been happy to see him die but history and all that.)

Anyway, bleh. Poor Naevia.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Caesar in this show. Him killing Naevia made me love him even more.

omg, don't even talk about Varro. I'm not even partly over that shit yet.

Varro was by far one of the most lovable characters in the show imo. There were a lot of harsh deaths in this series but I think Varro's hit the hardest. (Maybe because he was the first (?) major character to die? His relationship with Spartacus and the excellent acting makes that scene so difficult to watch. Or think about. Arg.

I actually think Varro was the only gladiator character who died and didn't really have it coming. :/ There might be exceptions (I don't remember who all died, honestly) but he, despite having his flaws, was actually a good person. A good Roman, even, which I wish really would have come up in Season 3 when Spartacus decided to save the Romans the first time. /opportunity lost

which I wish really would have come up in Season 3 when Spartacus decided to save the Romans the first time.

That would've been a great moment. Maybe it never crossed their minds? Such a shame.

My SO and I have gone back and forth about Varro's death and its effect on the subsequent seasons. He is absolutely convinced that the show would have been even more interesting if Varro had lived, and went through a lot of angst and internal conflict over rebelling against his own people. It would be interesting, sure, and it would have helped make clear a lot of the issues with social class built into the Roman system of slavery...

...but I'm of the mind that Varro's death was absolutely necessary for the progression of the plot. He stood as the only "good" Roman in the majority of the main characters' eyes, and was essentially a moral compass, a reminder that the majority of Romans out there in the real world are normal, decent people that don't enjoy doing ridiculously shitty things to each other. If Varro had lived, Spartacus would have remained in that moral grey area, never venturing into that "All Romans are bad, therefore they must die" headspace. The rebels couldn't have justified their actions if they had continued to associate with "good" Romans; they would have seen Roman civilians as people instead of cogs complicit in the machinery of slavery.

I was completely fine with Naevia's death. Judging from the way she felt about Crixus, I'm not sure she would have found life to be particularly livable or meaningful without him. It was one thing to be sent to the mines and know that he still lived, but another thing entirely to see him die. And then carry his fucking head around. That's one soul-destroying combination, right there. She seemed like such a ghost of herself at the beginning of "The Dead and The Dying," as though she was just running out the clock, and waiting to die in battle so they could be reunited again. I'm pretty sure she knew that she would be joining Crixus shortly... and I think if I had been in her shoes, I would have thoroughly embraced it. Going into battle with a serious deathwish and zero fucks to give would kind of make a person a berserk killing machine, and hey, she DID send a lot of Romans to their graves/burial urns/whatever.

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-04-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I wasn't exactly happy about her dying but of course it was going to happen and you're right, it was something she wished for. (She really did seem done with the world by that point; she just wanted to kill as many Romans as she could then die to be reunited with Crixus.)

So in that way, yea, I wouldn't have wanted her to live because she would've been miserable. Watching that scene was still difficult though.

To be honest, the only death that made me sad at the end there was Gannicus. I don't even particularly like Gannicus, but it was unexpectedly heart-breaking that he was the only (named) rebel who was crucified. :/

Well, that and Kore, but Kore's entire story was just a soul crusher.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
See, I was totally bummed about his death, too... but then I realized I could say "Gannicus died on the cross for our sins," and that made it all worthwhile.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
LOVE THIS. And I'm totally saying it to the next Bible thumper who tries to guilt me onto my knees. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
AND IT'S CANON. He died so that we can drink, and fuck, and carry on like the freeborn fools that we are.

/ it also makes religious iconography waaaay funnier. "Is that Gannicus on your necklace? Ohhhhh, it's Jesus... my bad." Well, someone out there is bound to be a Gannicus-ian. Gannicus-ite?

I was sad that the rebels had to die but after Crixus' death, you could see that Naevia didn't want to live anymore. I'm very glad she got to die a warrior, the way Crixus died, and I'm sure she welcomed her death in the end.

I still can't believe how this series is retroactively affecting me. Didn't give any fucks when it was one, the second it was over, I started to brood over EVERYONE. Like, when Gannicus was dying, he saw Oenmaus, but why didn't he see Melitta? Fuck, I even started to retroactively ship Spartacus/Ilithyia and that was some unhealthy shit right there.
mfirefly10: (SP GOA - OT3 Melitta + her boys)

[personal profile] mfirefly10 2013-04-27 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
lol, so I wasn't the only one thinking this?

Like, my reasons were solely OT3 related because I clung to Oenomaus' words that he and Melitta would be waiting for Gannicus in the after-life and I was slightly bummed when only Oenomaus was there. Though that probably had more to do with casting/lack of time than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Like, when Gannicus was dying, he saw Oenmaus, but why didn't he see Melitta?

THIS BOTHERS ME SO MUCH. I wonder if it wasn't a statement about a) getting a warrior's death or b) "real love", and either option freaks me the hell out. Gannicus and Melitta were friends before all the nonsense; did he not want to see her in Heaven, or whatever? Does "Heaven" have gender divisions? Was he just hallucinating? WHAT IS GOING ON.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Because Oenomaus needed to have the bro talk with Gannicus about how much cooler Saxa was than Sibyl, and that we're all a little disappointed in him for leaving the girl-with-personality for the girl-who-is-a-plot-device.

That, or Oenomaus is everyone's spirit guide.

(Please let option #2 be for realsies.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
What, you mean you don't approve of "guy loves the devout, pure woman" (which was pretty much every romantic relationship in the show, minus Lucretia and her husband).
mfirefly10: (SP V: Crixus/Naevia - OTP redo)

[personal profile] mfirefly10 2013-04-27 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I have a love/hate relationship with that scene.

On the one hand, I hate that Caesar killed her (though I'm glad it wasn't some random soldier) and that she didn't get any final words.

On the other hand, I love that she died gladiator-style as a symbol of the warrior she'd become and I think her death was fitting given how broken she was by Crixus' death. There was really nothing left for her beyond fighting the Romans and she got to kill several before Caesar killed her.
