My last class of grad school was on Wednesday. On May 3rd I will officially graduate and hold a Masters in Public Administration.

I would be so much more excited about this if I had a $*&^!@ job.

Congrats! I hope to graduate after the Fall semester. I almost went for an MPA myself, but then figured I'd be in school spending money I didn't have.

Where did you get your MPA, btw? (I ask because my university is nationally ranked, and draws a lot of people, so I wonder if you graduated from my school.)

Boy I hear you on the job issue. At the moment I'm racking up just about all the resources I can and storing them off to the side so I can start applying to them like crazy before I graduate.

(As a side note, many fed agencies are very keen on the idea of MPAs right now, if that's up your alley.)

I go to James Madison University in VA.

I, and many other members of my cohort, have applied to numerous federal jobs. Nobody has heard anything back, but we live close to DC and all that we're getting from our contacts, parents, and friends is that sequester is making everyone panic right now.

Beginning the job search early is a good idea. I did that and got a couple of interviews. No bites yet though. :(

Ah, cool.

These freaking federal jobs-- the sequestration has everything and everyone's panties in a bunch, and all of the hiring components are locked down super tight. I had applied to a fed scholarship in October-- have yet to hear back about even first wave acceptances.

While I'm with you on panicking about federal jobs (sort of my dream end goal), right now is me taking a quiet little breath for having dodged a bad bullet. My major is broad enough to be applied to just about any job that requires social science research, so I've got everything from federal jobs, to academic positions, to work overseas.

Can I ask, what did you concentrate in with your MPA? Like here in Albany they have everything from Urban Planning to Homeland Security.

My concentration was in Public and Non-Profit Management. Pretty much everybody in my cohort did that concentration. The way classes were scheduled made it very difficult for anyone to do any of the other options. Plus, few of the classes needed for the other concentrations were ever offered.

Some of my friends' parents were furloughed. I'm not even applying for federal jobs until the feds get their act together. It's just a waste of time.

What's your major?

Oh so grad school bureaucratic dysfunction is pretty much universal, then. My school was also screwing the pooch on course offerings for specific concentrations.

I don't blame you you on waiting for these political budget shenanigans to calm way down. Maybe you can teach classes at a community college in the meantime? That's one of my on-hold job ideas, as well as joining the reserves in the military.

Mine is Communications, with a concentration in Political Communication.

I've considered teaching at a community college. I'm not sure how much more time I want to spend in academia. This program seriously soured me on the idea of making a career of it. Right now I'm looking for a job in state or local government. Possibly non-profits.

I was a reservist in my teens and early twenties. I signed up when I was 17. It's a good opportunity and a great way to get experience. One thing I would advise is being careful when choosing a MOS (mission operative specialty). I went for Military Police, but I think I would have been more comfortable in Public Affairs or Public Relations.

I definitely know what you mean; spending too much time in academia makes my skin crawl, too. Unfortunately I am at a loss with gov jobs that are outside my career focus, especially non profits.

If you're not adverse to travelling or working overseas, you might check out countries recruiting native English speakers. I have a few countries I'm waffling with in teaching jobs, so there are opportunities.

Oh definitely with the MOS selection. Likelihood is I'd tailor it to my overall career goals, while applying to and hopefully getting accepted to the federal agencies I'm interested in.

I haven't given much thought to teaching overseas. It might be interesting. Have you had any experience with that?

Good luck with your job search!
