Tumblr question (mysterious numbers)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty new to Tumblr, and I noticed sometimes there's, like, a little notification on the dashboard icon (reflected in the page title too) with a number. What does the number... mean? It doesn't seem to correspond to the number of new posts people I'm following have made, it doesn't seem to correspond to the number of people I'm following who have made new posts, sometimes it doesn't even seem to correspond to whether any posts have been made. The only meaning I can glean from it is that if there is a number there, someone I'm following has posted something... probably.

What does it mean. The mystery has been haunting me for weeks.

Is it possible for you to link or post a picture? Because I have no idea which number you're talking about. Are you referring to the "posts" number? Because that's the number of posts you've made. That's not really a notification though. It's always there.

Sorry. No, it's, like, a number in a little red speech-bubble-looking thing that appears over the dashboard icon... I think. (Sorry, it's not there for me to screencap right now.)

OH THAT.

THAT THING.

It's an imprecise measurement that tumblr comes up with of "new posts" by people you follow. Emphasis on imprecise.

Ohhh, okay. That's what I thought at first, but it was rarely even close to accurate, so I thought it must have been something else.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's not accurate at all.

Welcome. :)

Is it in a little red speech bubble? It corresponds to the number of new posts on your dashboard that you haven't viewed, but it's not always accurate.

Thanks! Yeah, that makes sense, but since it's almost never accurate for me, I didn't realize. Okay then.
