It would be far more productive to examine his work and what it means than the man himself.

Unless you would get the same standstill?

Are you saying I should? Or the people in the never-ending battle should?

Cuz, if you're talking about me, like I said: no fucks are given on my behalf about Whedon. I have no opinion of whether or not he is a feminist because I haven't examined his work beyond The Avengers and nothing else he's done appeals to me. So I have no horse in this battle and do not want one.

If you're speaking of the people in the never-ending battle, then I agree that they should absolutely base their opinions upon examining his work.

But leaving the man out of it, is where it becomes sticky.

Some people will see leaving out his personal opinions, explanations, comments, and interviews as the fair/correct thing to do and have no problem with it.

Some people will feel you can't because those things give you insight as to what he intended, what one scene actually meant, and what was the purpose of Character A going through that trauma. And those peeps feel without knowing his intentions: how can one truly defend or deride calling him a feminist?

And let's be honest, peeps on both sides of this battle will use anything Whedon says to prove or disprove him being a feminist. For example: someone may point out a scene that they feel clearly shows he's a feminist and someone will counter with an interview snippet that they clearly feel shows he's a misogynist. You can also put this in reverse.

So like I said: a never-ending battle.

It equal parts intrigues and baffles me: everyone is so passionate in their hate/love, defense, or tearing down of one man.

It was just a question in general. I was wondering if you felt it would be more productive to do that instead.

Cuz, if you're talking about me, like I said: no fucks are given on my behalf about Whedon. I have no opinion of whether or not he is a feminist because I haven't examined his work beyond The Avengers and nothing else he's done appeals to me. So I have no horse in this battle and do not want one.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I don't have much interest in his other work.

Ah, yeah, that's the never ending back and forth of "Do you follow the idea of Death of the Author or not?" I get what you're saying now. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It equal parts intrigues and baffles me: everyone is so passionate in their hate/love, defense, or tearing down of one man.

Probably because he's so popular an influential.

No problem. I enjoyed our conversation :)

Probably because he's so popular an influential.

You're right. So he'll always be a controversial figure.
