They're not canon?

Don't tell that to Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella.

I will never have the chance to meet them so I'm good on that front. Also, I don't particularly care what the voice actors have to say. Pun not intended. I mean, I see Timon and Pumbaa in a platonic odd couple way but if people want to interpret them as a romantic couple I don't care. They're practically married anyway.

Speaking of though, are they really dead set against it or something?

Wires seem to have gotten crossed in the commenting - they're not against it, they're for it - they've said a couple times (around the time that Lion King II came out, and I think again when 1½ was released) that they consider T/P to be Disney's first canon gay couple. I doubt they have particularly strong feelings on it, but that's their opinion on the matter.

Pretty sure that's just wishful thinking (especially since Nathan is openly gay). Seeing how Disney portrays romance in their movies and how Disney portrays friendships - it's the latter.

I would also be a bit miffed if this was canon. They're both "wacky sidekicks", they're there to make the audience laugh. The pig farts all the time and the meerkat is an arrogant loser. If that was the first Disney gay couple I'd feel uncomfortable.

I had no idea Nathan Lane was openly gay. He denied it at the time he did The Birdcage and it makes me sad that he felt like he had to lie about it back then :(

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He's never denied being gay.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He denied it for years, especially in interviews for The Birdcage.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
uhm isn't he bisexaul, though? Which would be why he would deny he's gay.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

He's gay, not bisexual. I remember him saying something once along the lines of he used to think it wasn't anyone's business but that he felt it was important to come out when Matthew Shepherd was killed to help rally support for hate crime legislation.

I'm sorry about misunderstanding you. My bad.

Huh, that's interesting. I had no idea. What does Disney think of their views?

Never commented, so far as I know.

Huuuuuuuuuuuuhhhh. Interesting. Thank you for telling me.

Usually I'm a "ship and let ship" type of person, but in this case I just have to disagree. I'm glad that they aren't canon and I don't get why so many people suggest they're a "secret gay couple" just because they raised a child together.

My reason is that I just really dislike Timon and I can't see them as a romantic couple given how Timon talks down to Pumbaa. They hang out together because they're both societal rejects. Timon needed protection and Pumbaa just wanted to find a friend.

Also, Timon only wanted to "adopt" Simba as a personal bodyguard. Again, just for his own selfish reasons.

Conclusion: Timon doesn't deserve a sweet character like Pumbaa.

(Damn you, OP, for making me think so hard about shipping two animals ;D)

Well, I guess so many people insist they're a couple because they basically raised an "adopted kid" together.

Personally I don't really have much interest in shipping animals, anthropomorphic or otherwise, but I certainly see where it comes from.

But Pumbaa was the one that wanted to take care of Simba. Timon wanted to leave him alone until Pumbaa mentioned how Simba would be a personal bodyguard, not a "child of us!". So I don't see it neither in the "Gay couple that adopted a lion that become in the King of Africa" trope.

While I really don't care about the inner workings of whether or not an animated meerkat and wart hog might be secretly in love or not, I really don't get why so many people take an initial character motivation and act like it's set in stone.

Sure the original motivation wasn't this selfless, pure, beautiful thing - but their relationships came to mean more than "I'm lonely and I need a bodyguard". It seemed pretty obvious that by the end of the Hakuna Matata montage, they were more or less their own little inseparable family.

I mean idk, but I was a social reject when I was younger, and I did form friendships with other people out of convenience. But that doesn't mean the years I spent with them were just based on that one selfish thing that propelled me toward them forever, and nothing more.

Since when did the bullshit concept of "canon" matter in the mostly imaginary and interpretive practice of "shipping?"

So like because they don't make out on screen, them being life partners doesn't mean anything? Whether it's explicitly a romantic relationship or not idk how you could say they're not "canon". I mean, Jay and Silent Bob probably aren't gonna get married in the movies but their relationship as friends or whatever else still qualifies imo, same case here
