But... isn't their existence pure torture? It's been so long since I watched this series, I'm not sure I remember. (I remember reading from somewhere that the howling sounds EVAs make are screams of anguish/pain/insanity/etc.)

I agree it would be cool to kick ass like an EVA, but I wouldn't want to live in a hollow existence where I'm in constant agony and where I'm not in control of my own body.

Yeah, to be an EVA (apart from Yui, who was fully absorbed) you have to have your soul ripped in half, half dumped in the Eva and the other half left damaged and incomplete in your body until it dies. That does not sound like a fun time for me.

also, notably, the Eva itself is lobotomized. so you'd essentially be a vegetable until you were called to fight, and the berserking is all instinct anyway. i appreciate wanting to be a giant robot fighting aliens, but honestly, almost any other giant robot has a better life than the poor Evangelions

I especially love the wannabe-EVA-pilot fans who think they would be so special and able to really kick ass and sort Gendo out. Heh, they would be broken so hard if they were in Eva with that attitude. Even worse if they though Eva piloting would be super-fun.

If I were in Eva I'd rather be a redshirt who buys it in the first attack, save myself the psycho trauma.

But then you would do literally nothing other than fight. And most times they fight they get dismembered, have their limbs smashed etc.

Isn't the whole point of this series that the life of a hero, especially as a teenager, is traumatic and horrible, and no one would ever want to be one? I know it's not quite as straightforward about that as, say, Madoka, but it's still pretty obvious.
