I had to read it for high school and then I had to read it again in college. I recognize its merits. I can discuss it messages and all that.

But I still don't like the book and as an english major I am aware this makes me a bad person. I won't watch the movie unless someone I like drags me to it.

I'm an English major too and I don't particularly like it either, and I don't think that makes either of us bad people. As long as you're capable of looking at it its merits and messages without letting your personal opinion cloud your perception, I personally don't see a problem. Just because something is established as good lit, doesn't mean you have to personally like it.

True. I was just being kind of sarcastic. The people I learn with/from were horrified when I said I didn't like the book. I think they were mostly surprised because we had just finished discussing it and I contributed non-biased input. Then everyone was talking about seeing the movie and it slipped out. Seriously, with the looks they gave me you think I had just said I set books on fire for fun. Actually, now that I look back I think it’s kind of funny.

Ah yes, that is kinda funny! I just had an encounter the other day similar to that where I had to defend myself and I think I projected a bit heh. It's always struck me as funny that people get surprised about something like that - if anything, being trained in reading lit should in theory make you more inclined to be unbiased, not less. Or anyone who's trained in critical thinking of some sort or another, really.

Yeah, I bet they have that reaction because they've met so many people who simply use what they've learned to bolster their own opinions instead of actually thinking and considering them. I don't know. I do know that in order for one of my professors to get published* he had to take out some factual evidence about how not all of Freud's theories are correct in order to get a panel to pass it because one of the people on the panel was a Freudian.

Goes to show you that even the most critical minds can have biases that don't always help them make the best decisions.

*It was a literary paper, not a psych paper.

Oh man, that's just idiotic, I hate that kind of thing. People with biases like that are so frustrating.

Yup. That's life though. On the bright side, mostly my professor was just surprised there were and Freudians left. I think he got a kick out of that.

I think I've met more English majors who hated Gatsby than liked it, actually.
