Wait...you don't need to do English right 'til the end in the US?

When I was in high school, here in Ontario, all 4 required years of secondary school had English as one of the required credits. Only the optional (now non-existant) fifth year didn't require it (I took it, anyway).

if your grades are good enough you can skip straight to college courses for some things, and since you get double credit for it, it's definitely the lucrative option. Because of that program I was able to graduate from uni early :)

I think requirements vary. I was private school, but we had 4 years mandatory. I think for public schools it's often 4 years mandatory but some of that can be college level, as deadtree said.
