I created a new tumblr account (for personal, non-fandom stuff) and can't upload an avatar for the life of me. I'll choose one and it just won't upload. And yeah, I know it takes a while, but it's been a week already and nothing is uploading. I even tried using the icon I used for my first tumblr, but nope.

What should I do?

Contact support? I can't really think of any reason if you are in your settings for that blog at the place to change your icon that it wouldn't upload unless there's something wrong with the uploader on tumblr itself.

Do you have missing e installed?
