Explanation

There was this article: http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/wpress/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/

And now everyone is all "I don't have the spoons to do this today" and such. See also: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/the%20spoon%20theory

Oh, that. I vaguely remember reading that years ago, and not thinking very highly of it. Can't believe people are still harkening on.

So people are comparing being lazy to having a degenerative illness? I don't even know what to say to that. I guess I haven't seen this because everyone who knows me knows I have a degenerative illness and they're aware how amazingly offensive this is.

The spoon theory is a cutesy, convenient way of describing the problem of allocation/opportunity cost, which everyone deals with in their way because everyone has limited energy. The limits may be in different places but anyone can reach theirs.

Actually the spoon theory, as linked above, is a cutesy, convenient way of describing living with degenerative illness. I don't blame AYRT for finding it offensive when people use it to describe not wanting to get off tumblr and attend to their RL responsibilities.

No one would extend it to describe the problem of limited energy if it didn't do that very tidily; on the other hand, a few people who live with chronic illness have chosen to see energy limitation as a problem unique to themselves.
