It's perfectly possible to think that the truth is valuable in and of itself, and to think that it's acceptable to tell a white lie or not tell the truth when it would make things worse. If the truth has value, that doesn't mean it's the only thing that has value; you have to weigh the value of truth against the value of whatever outcome revealing it will lead to. To put it another way, if truth is an end in itself, there are still other ends and you have to find some kind of compromise between them or choose one end or another; truth being an end in itself doesn't mean that it's the highest end.

so I agree with you, but I don't think that your position means that truth being valuable depends on anything. It's always valuable; it's just that sometimes other things are more valuable.
