Don't feel embarassed, OP. I'm the same way with a lot of older anime and their one-episode-only-character-doomed-to-die.

Is it just me, or does that look a bit like a Bioshock Big Daddy?

Sometimes once-off characters get the best and/or most tragic storylines. Because the writers aren't under pressure to make them fit in with the rest of the cast or the story, and because they won't have to stick around too long, they sometimes get the cleanest, most coherent stories, even if they're only an episode long.

And, yes, I've cried for I don't know how many once-off characters too.

Oh goodness yes.

Naoki Urusawa's manga Monster did this to me with pretty much every other one-off character.
