Guilty-pleasure media?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom and I both love to watch Tabitha Takes Over, even though I know its intellectual value is basically nil. (Secret that I'd make if I weren't so lazy: I watch it mostly because Tabitha is very Domme-ish.)

What are your guilty pleasure shows?

I watch Family Guy and American Dad a lot. I know they have a lot of problems, but they're easy to tune out when I'm doing homework and some of the jokes are funny.

Also I love the Soup, Joel McHale is my favorite asshole on tv.

Mostly Gilmore Girls, which I don't want to classify as a guilty pleasure, but I always feel embarrassed to mention it.

I got through a few seasons of Big Bang Theory hate-watching it, so to speak, before I started just plain hate-hating it.

Most things that I enjoy I don't feel guilty about, though.

Food from around the world shows. Like Eat Street where they visit food trucks from all over. Man, does that show make me hungry.

Most of my fandoms are guilty pleasure things.

House Hunters. I fucking love that show. I watch at least one episode a day.

I don't really watch shows. But my guilty pleasure is yaoi manga. Tons of yaoi manga. Oops.

It doesn't even turn me on, I just can't get enough of the ultra-clichéd romances for some reason.

Glee, because everyone seems to hate it nowadays.

Tabitha is also a guilty-pleasure.
Last weekend I watched the marathon of Snapped. I don't know why, I just watched and enjoyed it...

Right now it's the Devil is a Part-timer/Hataraku Maou-sama. It's an anime about a demon overlord working at a fast food joint that's totally not McDonald's. General consensus seems to say it's surprisingly good, especially considering the premise. Even so, I haven't been this excited or invested about any type of show in years so I can't help but feel some shame about it being some anime about fast food and demons.

I've said this before and I'll probably say it again, but: Drop Dead Diva. IDEC, I adore that show and even though it can be far from perfect I'll probably never quit watching.

My number one movie guilty pleasure is Rock of Ages. It's stupid as hell, but watching it never fails to put a smile on my face.

Honestly, there's little I'm embarrassed about watching as a guilty pleasure. I guess anime/manga is my guilty pleasure since I only discuss it online b/c I don't want to deal w/the shit of people looking at me weird/going after me for watching "kiddie" stuff irl since I'm "too old" for that. I'm not embarrassed about it--I just don't talk about it to others who aren't already interested in it themselves. Honestly, I usually like it more than western media due to the limited runs/plot/story/characters (like Sailormoon w/it's "kissing cousins" (gag) and Japan with it's lesbian lovers characters. It terrible when "kiddie" stuff from a foreign country >> adult stuff in your country of origin.

I generally don't say I'm watching Teen Wolf in real life unless it's with the friend I'm watching it with. It's not a show I want to advertise to people I watch, especially since a lot of those people I'm trying to impress with not only my writing but my taste in writing.

Maybe the amount I watch certain movies is a guilty pleasure? If I like something, I latch on and rewatch almost to the point where I can't stand the movie/show. I've seen every episode of Parks and Recreation seasons 2-4 a ridiculous amount, same with Arrested Development. There are also certain movies I put on just for noise or because they're really nice. Right now that's been Marvel universe movies.

The Kardashians. I'm not embarrassed when other people find out I've seen the show.

I'm just hella embarrassed when I catch myself enjoying it. I don't even know why I like it. I don't really enjoy it or care about the people or what's happening. A couple of times I've wandered off before the "storyline" has concluded and not really cared which is very unusual for me.

Well, I know why I like Khloe. She's crazy hot.

The Incredible Dr. Pol

... for all the calf birthings and horse castrations. D: My family thinks it's disgusting and I'm like ooooh that's kinda cool so I watch it on my own time. :I

Any Gundam series. They're so ridiculous and absurd, but they're also awesome and full of juicy drama. Om nom nom.

Princess Ai--which is basically Courtney Love's Mary Sue self-insert fanfiction about... herself. But no matter how silly it is, I can't bring myself to hate it. It's silly sugary fun.

Also, High School of the Dead. You can see glimmers of potential with the zombie horror narrative, and with Saya and Hirano's characters, but then it all gets buried under boobs and silly love triangle shit. The result is incredibly and bizarrely inconsistent in tone, bordering on goddamn ridiculous, but I can't help but enjoy it anyway. I really have no idea why! (Subbed only, though. The dub really is just unwatchable.)
