In fairness, how many possible ships that aren't fucked up or harmful are there in Eva?

I guess Rei / Shinji and Misato / Kaji. But I can't think of too many beyond that (although it should be said it's been quite some time since I watched the series)

Did you mean Asuka/Shinji? But yeah, even Misato/Kaji is sort of...screwed up, a little? Not to the extent that the others are.

Honestly that's part of the reason why I ship Kaworu/Shinji--in normal shows I'd probably be like "Dude they've known each other for like, a week, and then he forces Shinji to kill him" but with NGE it's just like "Well, it's less screwed up than the alternatives."

Even Asuka/Shinji is unhealthy. If he's not overly depending on her for any affection, or jerking off to her comatose body, or considering violence as an answer if she rejects him (kom susser tod), she's verbally and physically abusive towards him :(

In an AU, I could see them together as highschool sweethearts, but only if it turns out they break up after realizing how not good for eachother they really are.

Well, in an AU they might not have the same emotional problems that leads to all the mutual abuse between each other, too.
