Best way to determine value of collectibles?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
What's the best way to determine how much your science fiction collection and anime collection is worth? I'm currently unemployed and I'm probably going to have to get rid of some things soon unless I find a job soon.

My main areas were Star Wars and Star Trek, and Sailormoon (mainly dolls, esp. the outer senshi) w/a smattering of other animes (YYH, Ronin Warriors, Slayers, etc.). In the anime I have dolls, pencil boards, doujins, playing cards, lots of manga (some japanese, but mostly translated in English--Clamp, Banana Fish, etc.).

In Star Wars and Trek, it's mainly Christmas ornaments, a few dolls, coffee mug. I also have some old Bionic Woman collectible cards that are in excellent condition.

Where's the best place to sell these items? Ebay? Is there a specialty site?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this. I've collected for years, but not in years due to grad school and lack of money, and I've never sold off any of my collections before, and never cared how much they were worth til now. Total newbie here in regards to selling.

It varies. There's almost always collecting communities that sell this sort of stuff. You can check the prices there and on Ebay to get a general idea of how much they're going for now. It takes a bit of guessing, but price up and then lower if it doesn't sell.

Thanks. I did find a SM sell community that looks interesting. I just really haven't seen some items I have on ebay to know how to even price up on like the Bionic Woman cards, so I wondered if there were some kind of specialty auction sites or something.

You could probably look it up by searching "Bionic Woman Card price" or something.

Manga is pretty much worthless tbh. I had a huge collection with lots of rare stuff that I tried to sell for years and couldn't even get a few bucks per volume. A lot of people sell volumes for one cent each, that's how worthless they are. I ended up just donating them to the local library instead.

For the Sailor Moon stuff, you may want to wait until the series reboot premieres (later this year I think) since there will be greatly renewed interest in old merch when that happens.
