background music recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Looking for music to play on headphones while doing other things like reading or homework or whatever. Just something to block out the rest of the world but not distract me from what I'm doing.

If you have a favorite show, you can usually find the background ost to it on youtube on a pre-made playlist. Most work pretty well for studying and homework.

Barring that there's always the old dead composers with fantastic music that apparently makes babies smart. You can always use that too.

I did not know nor think about tv show osts! Thank you for that idea.

I get kind of sucked into classical music, before I know it I'm bouncing in my seat pretending to conduct the orchestra. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong kind.

Not a problem! Hope it works for you!

Hmm, not much I can do about that. But I can recommend Takenobu, who has has really chill instrumentals.

Not OP but holy balls how did I not think of looking up TV soundtracks on YT before? I'm listening to Community's right now and it's perfect. Thank you!

I'd have to suggest Boards of Canada, Philip Glass' soundtracks [Koyaanisqatsi is a good one], and anything by Sigur Ros. :]

Try something in a foreign language. It still sounds nice, but since you don't understand it it's easy to put it in the lulling, background level of your attention.

If you like more middle eastern types of music I recommend Vas's album Sunyata - the singer vocalizes, but nothing on the cd is an actual word.

You can find a fairly long classical music mix in Youtube for just that purpose. I typed in "Long Classical" and it listed lots of options. :)

Someone linked Coffitivity (www.coffitivity.com) here once, which I found to be a cool background white noise thing. I'd also recommend Rainy Mood (www.rainymood.com) for something more soothing.

I like Vitamin String Quartet- they do popular songs all by strings, so it's instrumental.

Some very good instrumental bands/composers:
Explosions in the Sky
This Will Destroy You
Sigur Ros
Ratatat
Air
Cinematic Orchestra
Mogwai
Yiruma
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Philip Glass

Similar to the TV show OST rec above - I'm a huge fan of movie and video game OSTs as well myself. I also really, really love stuff like Two Steps from Hell. :)

I really like Ludovico Einaudi. Piano and some strings, but soothing, not like classical music which can get pretty bombastic.

Disney Parks music. try background or Soarin'.

or resorts when it shows up on scheduled.

this is probably not what you're looking for, but...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
5 hour Epic Music mega mix: http://youtu.be/lP0D5u3EMfA

Can you handle it?

But for serious, that's probably a bit much for simple background music but if you go on youtube and do basic searches for blocks of types of music you will be surprised by how many options you have.

I like avant garde electronic music for this (the lack of lyrics and often of melody entirely means I'm less likely to be distracted).

Some examples:
-Electronic Panorama I: http://archive.org/details/agp13
-Electronic Panorama II: http://archive.org/details/agp14
-anything by Karlheinz Stockhausen or Krzysztof Penderecki
-sometimes some things by Pierre Henry but at times his works have too much melody for me
-one of my favorites, Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima by Krzysztof Penderecki: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HilGthRhwP8

I like electronica/new age style stuff for this. Enigma, Lesiem, and Amethystium are some of my favorites.

It's rather late, but the first four Silent Hill soundtracks. Most of it is instrumental as well.
