Oh, I don't think it's ANYWHERE near 80 percent. I know for a fact it isn't in the corners of the fandom I frequent. It's closer to 50-50 these days, but with lots of switching, which is all I ask.

sa

ALTHOUGH maybe anon is just friends with lots of bottom!McCoy fans. That happened to me in another fandom and it's the whole reason I actually have top/bottom preferences at all (I always prefer switching but in most fandoms I end up with a character who I'd like on top if they aren't going to switch. Or if there's only one penetrative sex scene.) These fans were very, uh, vocal, at least under friends lock. I could actually see their influence on the kink meme before they all moved on to other fandoms. They were so irritating that I of course came to enjoy the flipped dynamic more than their preference.

I think that switching is the most common for this pairing, and maybe my experience is the inverse of yours--you can definitely wind up in little echo chambers in fandom.

To the extent that people DO have strong preferences with this pairing, I generally see bottom!Kirk, perhaps partly as a result of woobification of Jim following the last Trek movie. It will be interesting to see if it changes after STID (since he's older and more in charge), or just gets worse due to the massive amounts of manpain he's undoubtedly going to suffer.

Really? It's been some time since I read any but in most fanfictions I read (not just K/M ones - although I don't read Chekov pairings so it might be different there) Kirk is on the bottom most of the time.
