Vikings

Spoilers, obviously.

So, I just watched the season finale and what the hell, History channel? You hype this up to be awesome and...Ragnar has an affair, Athelstan does nothing, and we have a convenient plague to get rid of the girl children. No cool sword fights, no emotional fallout, just some scheming.

Fie on you, History channel. Fie, I say.

At least Athelstan has his old hair back and Bjorn spoke for the audience and growled out his father for being a low life cheater. (Though it broke my heart when Gyda's last thought was to look after Athelstan and Athelstan's first thought after getting strong enough to get out of bed again was to look after Gyda. Though he was too late. I would have loved to see more of their relationship. Did the girl have a crush on the young priest or did she see him as protective older brother figure. There was a sweetness those two had that Gyda did not share with anyone else in her family.)

The hate for Aslaug in the fandom already is astounding. But I can see it. You can't help but compare her to Lagertha because Ragnar is in the middle And Lagertha is such a kickass, smart, interesting character. The princess would always come out the loser when compared with her.

I didn't understand Aslaug. Was she a ward of that guy they were visiting? His wife, daughter, what? She was at his house, so they had to know each other. Did he set Ragnar up or what? What was so fantastic about her that Ragnar forgot he was married to Ms. Badass? I don't hate Aslaug. I just don't get her as a character.

Yeah, we didn't get to see enough of Gyda and Athelstan interacting at all. They were so cute and I kinda got the impression that they were the odd ones out (the non-warriors in the family) so seeing them interact would have been adorbs. But no.

We could even have had some interesting secondary character action going on! Arne lost his brother/cousin/bf/bro/friend/somebody, take your pick last episode and seeing someone you're close to become a human sacrifice has got to suck. Do we see any emotional fall out from that? Anger at Ragnar for bringing a less than faithful slave as a human sacrifice? No. We got 'find hot naked chick. Stare at hot naked chick.'

The episode's only saving grace was Bjorn and Clive Standen.

I was kind of hoping/expecting Athelstan to convert Gyda before her inevitable death, especially after their conversation about the gods in that deleted scene. There were so many possibilities for these characters, and they were all flushed down the toilet in favour of shoving the plot way ahead on the timeline :\

I want Lagertha to be queen of everything. Thankfully, the creator agrees that she is an amazing and popular character and that she'll go on kicking ass.

Dear creator, I would be fine with Vikings: the Lagertha edition.

Is any one in the Vikings fandom who would NOT watch that show?

I would giggle like Floki over that show.

That would be kickass. Especially if it was in an alternative universe where Gyda lived.

Sigh. I adored Vikings pretty much from the start and had hoped it would continue it's awesomeness, but that finale was deeply, deeply unsatisfying. Right now I want nothing more than to punch Ragnar in the face and see Lagertha rule on her own. Lagertha watching much of the village die (including her own daughter) while Ragnar impregnates another woman does not a happy finale make, History. Bjorn standing up to his father pleased the hell out of me, and I loved Gyda and Athelstan's moments, but...gah, that was just such a bleak episode.

Gyda was adorable and so damn sweet. She should've have been killed off that way. (Or at ALL imo.) Near the end of the episode I became suddenly afraid that Bjorn was going to die somehow too, and was not a happy camper.

My OT3 is ruined. Everything is shit. WHY AM I WATCHING THIS SHOW AGAIN? (Not sure I'll stick with the series next season. I'll see how things go when it returns, but...idk. I don't see how Ragnar can become likable again after some of the things he's done in the last few episodes, and if he continues to be the main character...DNW.)

bleak is a great way to describe that episode. There was no fire to it (no pun intended)... it was just sort of "here, have a pile of angst and people not connecting in a way that makes sense, and please ignore the fact that there are HUGE EMOTIONAL ISSUES that we will probably never talk about again".

Ragnar still interests me as a character, but I'm not in love with him anymore. I'm still in love with Lagertha, Athelstan, Bjorn, and Floki though so I'll still be watching. The people I'm starting to hate are the writers, who have really tanked the last couple of eps.

That's the one thing that bothers me SO MUCH about this show. On a whole I adored this season (which feels weird to say since so far it's the ONLY season) but when there are things that need to be spoken about, they tend to ignore them.

Before you know it the next episode comes and there's been a time skip and everyone either forgets what happened or does their best to ignore it. (For instance, why the hell didn't we get a decent scene between Lagertha and Ragnar regarding her miscarriage? They could have at least shown us Ragnar upset about his child's death and his wife's pain before jumping to, "And now he's pulling away from Lagertha and thinking about hooking up with another woman". I was incredibly upset that we didn't get some kind of talk between Ragnar and Athelstan during or after Sacrifice too. Dude was going to sacrifice you to his god and you don't have a conversation about that? It doesn't make any sense.

Arrrrrrg, Vikings! POOP ON YOU.

(So agreed on the writing.)

"The Bible" was worse. Several orders of magnitude worse. I have zero respect for the "Non-history" Channel anymore.
