That happened for me with the whole Evelyn Evelyn debacle. Not so much the original concept, but her reaction to being called out by disability activists.

At any rate, I still like her stuff. But she increasingly bothers me as a person.

I don't think the original idea was all that offensive (speaking as a person with a physical disability, albeit not a conjoined twin). I think her reaction was abhorrent.

Okay, so these twins--Eva and Lyn--they're real people? But their backstory isn't? Or is it? And Palmer and her bandmate dress up as them and sing? And I'm not sure what's bad about her response. I didn't read the whole thing (there are a lot of links, maybe I should...) but this is what they quoted: "offending or belittling disabled people or people who have a history of sexual abuse could not be farther from our intention. we generally don’t like to offend and belittle ANYONE, but if there is anybody that we especially don’t want to alienate with this project, it is the people who might already feel marginalized and dismissed in our society. especially when that type of alienation is a major recurring theme throughout the whole Evelyn Evelyn record."

That doesn't seem bad? I'm not sure I understand. For the record, I've listened to maybe two songs from this woman and only know that she has a bad reputation and is generally rude and inconsiderate.

If she had kept to that, I might not consider her so annoying. As it is, she went on an Australian show (Good News Week) and mentioned that the Evelyn Evelyn thing was happening by summing it up as "--and then I got crucified by a group of disabled internet feminists." Which everyone else on the show then went on to laugh/groan about because they "couldn't think of any group more difficult to deal with."

keep in mind that her making fun of her disabled critics was in response to some blog posts, not a bunch of "SJWs" calling for her head or getting out the burning torches.

Dude, I have NO IDEA what you're talking about. I'm just commenting on the way online "activism" has gotten from my own experiences. It's doing more harm than good. So it's no surprise to me that she may react that way when you get more bullshit than actual concerns from SJ types.

Well, like I said, I don't think the original concept is offensive. But then when people called her on it (appropriation of the experience of disabled people/abuse survivors), her response was to shout them down rather than engage in any kind of productive discussion.

She also posted a nasty Twitter shot at FWD (the website that called her out on it) with something like "Busy ignoring disabled feminists today" (or something like that, I've lost the link to the original status update, and she's probably deleted it anyway).

My thoughts on EE are that I don't think the characters are as "helpless" as the detractors say (they're entirely self-taught musicians, remarkably well-adjusted for having been raised the way they were, and escaped from two of their four abusive home situations with no outside help at all) and their backstory is so OTT it's ridiculous to take it even remotely seriously (c'mon, conjoined elephants?), but it could probably have been done better as an animated thing rather than the creepy dressup routine.

I am pretty into circus sideshow things, so were it not for her response, that probably would have been completely up my alley.

One of AFP's songs recently spawned a good friendship and an entire AU ficverse for me via the Homestuck kinkmeme, so I have to admit I'm a bit biased in favour of her stuff. Doesn't mean I don't think what she does is stupid, but I'm less inclined to take it as malicious.

Pretty good!

Ultimately, I am pretty into Wagner and neo-folk and all sorts of great music made by awful people, so I'm able to still appreciate AFP even when she says and does shitty things. But the thing about a living artist with a big online footprint is that the line between art and personality becomes much more blurred than it has been in the past, and that's a mixed blessing. On the one hand, I like her music and I'd prefer not to know what she's like as a person. On the other hand, her close online relationship with fans offers opportunities for discussion and debate that wouldn't exist otherwise.

I'm with you on this. I like quite a bit of her music ("Map of Tasmania", the Young Punx song that she featured on with Peaches, is one of my favourite songs) but I just wish she would stop with so many things.
