Especially the "Boston deserve what they got because they supported the IRA" wank.

Yeah, let's sweep it all under the carpet because only American dead, maimed and bereaved matter. Got it.

Hello outraged British person!

It's generally frowned upon to point and laugh at people who have had limbs blown off, particularly soon after the fact, just because they happen to live in a certain city you dislike. Someone could just as easily say the Brits deserved a long terror campaign after being so shitty to Ireland and other parts of the Empire for years and years and years! I mean you guys intentionally starved millions in Ireland and India! That's way worse than giving money to the IRA.

Oh, that wasn't you?

Well I guess it'd be horrible to wish violence upon you and your loved ones, now wouldn't it?

Re: ot

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
im not pointing and laughing

merely disappointed by the reaction of people who werent directly affected in boston and the willful blindness involved

maybe this could be an opening for a learning experience and a reflection on what the city as a whole has allowed to go on

b/cuz for the majority of the city those people crippled or killed by the bomb are no less strangers then the six british troops the ira blew to pieces after finishing a charity marathon

Re: ot

How exactly did the "city as a whole" allow Irish terrorism to go on?

Was there a town hall meeting of All Bostonians where they decided en masse to support the IRA?

Because not even the fucking American Revolution worked that way, and that involved directly shooting British people. You seem fourteen.

Re: ot

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
b/cuz not every single bostonian put in a vote supporting the ira meant there wasnt widespread support on both a local cultural level and among the political actors in the city and we cant frame it in that light

arent you meant to be a historian

Re: ot

Well, yeah. And if I typed a sentence like "the entire city as a whole supported IRA terrorism" in an essay and handed it to a fellow historian, I'd get ripped to shreds.

Now, if I said "there was widespread support on both a local cultural level and among the political actors in that city" we'd be saying something different, now wouldn't we?

At the same time, if I tagged on "and therefore those living in Boston in 2013 deserved the Boston Marathon bombing" I would be punched repeatedly in the face because I deserved it.

I would then hopefully be deported back to England to silently eat curry chips and pretend I'm oppressed.

No I see absolutely no implied blame or gloating going on in this text.

amazing how you're able to project and infer intent through the written word.

that's some superpower you have there.

It is indeed!

You too can get such amazing powers by doing well in your average English or History class

Re: ot

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The original post did. It was as subtle as being hit in the face with a bat. Boston isn't only Irish, and even South Boston isn't mostly Irish anymore either. My family is Irish and from Southie, and believe me, not one of them supported the IRA.

I don't know if you've ever actually been to Boston, or if you've just read some "facts" off some website and now have a SJW crusade to wage, but you're pretty off-base here.

You do realize many of those affected weren't even from Boston in the first place, right?

Your line of reasoning doesn't even make sense within the context of your fucked up logic. There is no Gaia-like Spirit Of Boston to feel properly upset. There is no Captain Boston And The Bostoneers.

Re: Also:

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to change the subject, but "Captain Boston and the Bostoneers" should totally be a thing. Just because.

Re: ot

Maybe the British could have used the death of the six British troops as a reflection for what they, as a society and as a nation, allowed to go on, in Ireland, in Northern Ireland, and in the places around the world that they colonized.

This has never happened in immediate response to a tradgedy. Ever. If you suggested it to people near it? You'll probably get punched in the face. And rightly so.

Losing a loved one/limp/seeing your city ripped up is rarely a time for larger picture reflection. It is a time for grief and pain. And subsequent anger (hence the you getting punched).

I sincerely doubt the British people have some unique psychology that works any different then what we see over here.

you do realize that a huge, huge percentage of the people involved in the marathon aren't even Bostonians?

(well like you care considering you're cray, but yes.)

And the US has ever been the champion of freedom and oppressed peoples everywhere. Keep telling yourselves that.

Yes that belief is totally present in everything I've said.

You don't have an argument.
