There's the Evelyn Evelyn thing, and there's this

Oh. Wow.

Gross. D:

Those are both tacky (the video much more so) and a bit extreme, which seems to be her "thing" (from what I've seen/heard, not a fan), but still.. it's all just entertainment. People make her out to be a horrible person who has the potential to drown puppies and raze villages and push old ladies in front of moving vehicles.

For what it's worth, I agree that the amounts of vitriol she gets is ridiculous. That being said, I really think that Katie Perry skit is gross, and Palmer keeps on doing these small, idiotic things that makes it hard for me to admire her as a person even though I really like her music.

This. There are plenty of little things she's done that don't sit well with me (the Katie Perry bit and the Evelyn Evelyn project being top of the list), but I do think the amount of hate she gets can be pretty over the top. Criticism of her also quickly devolves into "i hate her eyebrows/she's ugly/she looks like she smells/she should keep her clothes on" etc. which is pretty disgusting.

da

Agreed... I think the thing is that Amanda Palmer does a lot of little uncomfortable / problematic things, but they aren't major. A lot of the response she gets is from people who are upset that she's Neil Gaiman's wife and they don't think she deserves him, and a lot of it is also from people who think she's ugly, don't like how she shaves/doesn't shave, and so on. The incredibly over the top hatred for her is kinda sexist tbh.

A lot of little things add up to something major.
I'm not a Gaiman fan and I don't care about her appearance. It's her actions that disgust me.

The "they're just jealous" excuse? Meh, not really. Sometimes doing a lot of little problematic things is just as much of a turn-off for people as doing one major thing. Frankly, I'd worry more about a lot of little things, because it's indicative of an ongoing pattern.

deciding it would be ~fun~ and ~artistic~ to roleplay being a disabled rape survivor for an album schtick and then calling disabled rape survivors 'whiners' for taking issue with said roleplay, simulating raping a woman for singing a song she doesn't like while co-opting queer experiences and anger, and creating senselessly tasteless poetry that empathises with someone who contributed to several deaths and mutilations scant weeks after said terrorist attacks occurred don't add up to being a horrible person to you?

I can see what they were going for with the video, but yeah, bad move :(

(I admit I laugh at Something Positive and Ghastly's Ghastly Comic, which have both made rape jokes, but the jokes I was laughing at were about situations that couldn't conceivably occur in real life, which I think does make a difference. The more realistic one in SP wasn't funny.)

I honestly don't get what they were going for. all I see is a really disgusting skit.
