Or adaptations don't need to be 1:1? Or that it would be excessively hard to present the evidence in the book, because all of it occurs in flashbacks and Ned's rather abstract thinking?

Oh please. Ned's flashbacks and dreams wouldn't have been hard to include in the slightest (or at least one of them).

I actually thought that the first season was great overall, but the second season was abysmal. Third season is shaping up to be better than the second, but still problematic. You can't say that they don't have time to include certain important things when they give seven minutes of screentime to the wonders of Pod's magical cock.

Sure it would have--first, you would have to physically see the scene to make sense of it, which I think by it's nature confirms more things than the book does. Second, you would have needed to explain who these characters are, where you are, what is happening in general (not to mention logistics with casting, set design, etc), which is really difficult to do since you haven't met any of these characters before and yet this scene is hugely important.

And then there's the final, most important part: contrary to what the internet would have you believe, the scenes in the book weren't that overt. Most people miss the references. But devoting an entire flashback to it would make it unbearably clear that this is important, this is worth remembering, and so on. Whereas the length of the books and the structure of a novel make it easy to slip in details under the radar.

I think the first season was slow, but the most faithful (which, actually, made me dislike the changes the most--when something is being really, really faithful, any deviance stands out and seem OOC), the second was stronger but meandered on many of the things that ACoK meandered on (Dany and Jon, mostly), and I'm loving the third season.

You can't say that they don't have time to include certain important things

But unlike S1 and S2, S3 is going to be split from SoS into two seasons.

If you have access to the DVDs or Blu-Rays, there's some extras on the dvds that fill in a lot of the gaps in the backstory. With the actors narrating over some interesting artwork and everything

And for what it's worth, I thought Lyanna+Rheagar might be Jon's parents from watching the extras on the S1 DVD. I hadn't read the books at that point and definitely came up with that theory on my own (I was so afraid of being spoiled that I religiously avoided any GOT stuff online). So there's enough subtext in the show, or at least in the DVD extras, to lead to that conclusion.

Me too, before I even knew it was a theory (I'm avoiding the entire ASOIAF fandom because I still have two books to read and I'm afraid of spoilers, so I also came to this conclusion on my own)
