flip-flop incident

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I had a flip-flop incident today that almost ended with me falling on my face through a screen door of glass, but instead just turned into nearly ripping half my big toenail off my toe. Well, more like, it bent it upward and broke from the bottom enough of that there's a tiny bit of blood I guess where the nail separated from the skin, but didn't break clear through enough to come off itself or be wobbly enough that getting it the rest of the way off will be easy.

Basically, I'm not 100 percent sure what to do with this at 10 o'clock at night. I know it's an emergency room thing, but I'm also not sure it's the sort of thing you go to the GP for all "Hey, doc, can you lop off my wonky toenail today?"

I'm going to gently take some nail clippers to it (though, it was already my big thick wonky nail that's hard to trim when it's NOT all bent to the heavens) and see if I can take care of it on my own -- and if I can't, I'll just load underneath the nail up with neosporin, wrap it up and I guess call the doctor in the morning and hope they can see me early since tomorrow is the day I agreed to take an overtime shift in the afternoon.

I'm sorry that happened to you, it sounds horrible. I hope your doctor can fit you in at once in the morning, and that they take care of it very gently.

Weird thing is it didn't really hurt all that much. There was the initial instance when it happened, but to be honest, I've stubbed my toe worse than that. And it doesn't really hurt now, which I guess is concerning enough, given that it's bleeding. But, BTW, being bent all to hell created the easiest nail-clipping experience I've ever had on this toe. I couldn't quite get all of it, but I got enough to be able to bandage it up with hardship.

ah, that's happened to me once

don't worry, just bandage it up and make sure it won't get infected
the pain will subside pretty fast, too

I figure if it starts hurting or looks like it's getting infected or becoming ingrown in absolutely heinous ways, I'll head to the doctor. Until then, it's wrapped up and work will just have to deal with it if I show up to the office in a different pair of flip-flops, because I'm not cramming this toe into closed-off footwear right now.

I really wish you were Australian and had called this a thong incident, because all the confused scroller-bys comments would have been hilarity as if brought to the world by angels.

Heh. Thong still gets a little play in the US -- in fact my mom and dad used it when I was growing up -- but I consciously avoid it for obvious reasons. :)

My big toenail came off once without me noticing, I think it had been loosened by me stubbing it and then when I took a bath it came off. Never really found out what happened.

Sooooo maybe soak your toe in warm water so that the nail gets all soft and easier to bend and clip?
