I'm pretty sure this is actually canonical; it makes sense for professional sports teams to try very, VERY hard to make players be friends so they work together as one great big unit.

I don't think that's as true as you'd think... you need chemistry for a successful team, but that doesn't mean being all buddy-buddy, necessarily. You can have people who hate each other and if they're both really good players and they can still play together on the pitch it's not necessarily a bad thing. You need the team to function as a unit but there are a lot of ways to get there, not necessarily buddy buddy. And it also depends a lot on the sport.
