Things you surprisingly miss about school.

I just had an ephiphany today that it's been over a year since I've seen an atlas moth or a bee-butterfly and I suddenly remember the times when they would fly in-between the classrooms and corridors and land on our palms as if we were tree branches, and we would talk about them and do our studies beside them.

Suddenly I miss being a high-school student.

Learning. The unique type of intellectual discussions and debates and lectures that only seem to happen in school.

The schedule! Oh how I wish for vacations and semesters and scheduled time off. The childhood type of freedom and lack of responsibility if you're talking high-school.

Yeah both of these. Although not so much the structured learning (that was good too but it's not what I miss) as having a ton of people around all the time who really, really enjoyed talking about intellectual stuff. The Internet is not a great substitute.

All of this!

Real life is so anti-learning, it's absurd. Like HOW DARE YOU BE LEARNING ON OUR DIME. GET BACK TO WORK (DOING SOMETHING YOU HAVEN'T LEARNED HOW TO DO.) ;____;

I haven't graduated long enough to miss much, I think. But recently I was sitting outside an office waiting for an appointment and they had those plastic blue chairs that we had to use in school. Some of them had armrests and I remember how we all used to squabble over the only two chairs in the class that had armrests. I think plastic chairs with armrests will forever mean a luxury to me now.

If we're talking about college, lots of things.

Structure and routine, having some ambition in life (even though getting a degree was anticlimactic in the end), socialization, my professors, the men's dorm I more or less lived in illegally the last semester of school, the few friends I made that I drifted apart from after I graduated, the town my college was in (though it's completely terrible now), ADDERALL, and even though I guess I could read plenty of non-fiction on my own, it was nice to have suggested required reading and being required to write about what I read made me linger on it more and absorb it more. I recently made a friend who enjoys non-fiction as much as I do and I've borrowed books from him and talked about them with them and it made me realize that I missed that about college

I mean most of these things are things I could replicate in my current life and nothing is stopping me from auditing courses at UT Austin or something (I work walking distance from the main campus) but still

Oh and I missed a huge one

TIME OFF IN THE SUMMER (though I was working full-time almost completely during college, I was unemployed my final year so I had a lot of free time)

Cafeteria food.
Having friends.

Yep.

Cafeteria food blew, though.

Where did you go that had good cafeteria food?

Eh, it wasn't high class fare, but I liked it. Especially square pizza. We had these bags of milk in elementary that we had to stab with a straw, that was fun.

We had the bags of milk! In middle school for a very short period of time. Both regular and chocolate. Those were awesome. The boys used to pretend they were breast implants, which made them a little less awesome but still. I wonder why they stopped and went back to carton milk? Hmm.

Oh, in my high school we would have waffle fries every once in a blue moon and those things were amazing. They had this seasoning on them that was super tasty, so much so that I would do anything I could to buy them if they were available and eat them in place of my regular lunch (I usually brought my own lunch to school)

I loved those stupid chicken sandwiches.

They were frozen chicken patties on generic hamburger buns.

But man, did I love them. XD

Also: cinnamon roll and chili days. The best ever.

taking organized classes. I always loved it, and then kind of forgot, until I took a sign language class recently and just enjoyed the hell out of it. I wish I had the time/money to always be taking a class, learning new things, etc.

I really miss living in a dorm in college because my school actually had really good food. I enjoy cooking, but it was so nice to have multiple choices that were already made for you, so it didn't matter if you were hurried or tired, you could still have a meal that wasn't from the freezer or required going out to a restaurant. I haven't made a salad in years because after having a salad bar available to me for four years, I can't be bothered to put in the work. (Also, buying all the ingredients separately would result in more food in my fridge than I could eat before it went bad.)

High school: Helping with the plays and concerts we had and my friends were in. Skipping class WITH said friends.

College: Uh, a lot more tbh. Our library-cafe, for one. The great wifi, LAN parties in the computer science building, using our shiny telescope in astronomy building/roof, being in the sub and on campus bar with friends, and just the random games and fun nights our department had.

Probably a million other things. Oh and it was nice to be away from family. :P

The structure. Getting up in the morning was bull, yeah, but I had something to do during the day.
