What Do I Send To My Friend?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a fandom friend who's now super into one of my old fandoms. I thought as a surprise that I'd send her some books about the series and throw in a poster from the show for good measure (I live in an area where they would be easy to find.)

The problem? Her parents are super-judgemental and tend to hound her over everything she does/is into. I don't want my friend to get into hot water if they find out what I sent (they're already becoming suspicious about said fandom and they will most definitely not approve if they do research it).

So...what do I send along with the fandom-y items that she can tell and show her parents I sent? The books are pretty heavy and will probably be in a largish box delivered straight to her front door. It's gonna be very conspicuous. I don't think she'll open the box in front of them, but there needs to be something for her to show. Any ideas of things to send that would fit into a medium box, not cost a huge amount, and seem like a plausible gift from a good friend?

Could you just send the poster in a bubble mailer? It'd be a lot discreeter (until she puts it on her wall, of course...)

Local food from your area that you can send (cans, sealed)? Some sort of light scarf? Perhaps a selection of beauty/bath products, with sweets and chocolate?

Mix in some other non-fandom related books? Maybe a small piece of artwork - even better if you're artistic and make her something.

How old is this fandom friend and do she have transport of her own? If so, renting a mail box for her own doesn't cost much and she can pick it up and take the items in when her parents aren't at the house. Or maybe she has a trusted friend you can mail the box too whose parents won't hassle them or who lives by themself and she can get it from them.

I would put a fake gift on top of the other stuff or something. Something that's nice that her parents would approve of.

Or hey, if you're willing for it to not be a surprise you could tell her what you plan to do so maybe she could give you tips/be ready for it when it arrives. If both of you have the same story to tell her parents it will seem less suspicious.
