Cursor thing

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm hoping someone can help me. I hope this is coherent enough for someone to make sense of as I'm really bad with computers and don't really know how to describe this.

That blinking cursor usually only in word processors, comment boxes, ect... places where you can type...is on every page of my internet browser. I can't type anything onto the pages, but the cursor is there where it shouldn't be. It acts just like a cursor other than not producing letters, appearing where I click with the mouse. Also, when I use the directional arrows on my keyboard to try to scroll up or down it takes me automatically to the bottom or top of the page.

I don't know what happened or why. I tried just pressing keys to try to undo it and looking for help online, but don't know what I'm doing or even looking for really.

First, have you already tried restarting the computer?

I have tried restarting the computer, and just closing out the browser, but neither worked.

Not sure, but I think that means you have the scroll lock on

It's not the scroll lock, the little light over the words "Scroll Lock" on the keyboard wasn't lit, but I hit the scroll lock button to turn it on and off to try and it didn't do anything.

It sounds like you might have caret browsing turned on. In Firefox you can hit F7 to turn it off, but I'm not sure about other browsers.

I do use Firefox and that worked, thank you so much!

You're welcome! I'm glad it worked! :)

You might have accidentally turned on caret browsing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caret_navigation

I don't know what browser you're using, but try going through your browser settings/preferences/options/whatever your browser happens to call them (one of these should be in one of the browser menus). See if you can find something that looks like caret browsing, and if it's on, turn it off.

Commenter above you fixed the problem, but thank you for the advise. I'll remember it for future reference.

Yeah, sorry, I write too slowly - the other anon replied while I was still typing so I only saw her/his comment after I'd posted :D Nice to hear it works now.
