Have you ever had that moment where you either realized or found out that a song's meaning was something that really threw you for a loop or changed the way you felt about the song?

The Boomtown Rats (let by Bob Geldof) did a song called "I Don't Like Mondays"... yeah, turns out it' about a girl who shot up a playground. YIKES.

I've known this for a while, but I love telling people that Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life is about crystal meth. The word "meth"'s in the lyrics, but people don't realize..

I remember that the radio version of it censored the reference to crystal meth, so it's pretty easy to miss if that's the only way you've ever heard the song.

I just found out last night that Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party" was about the time when he played a show at Madison Square Garden and was booed off the stage. It's probably obvious to older people (people who lived through the 50s/60s music scene) but I had no idea, I just always loved the song. It's so sad now :(

When I found out Vienna Teng's "No Gringo" was about a future where Mexico and the US have flipped sides in the immigration dilemma, I started listening to it over and over for days. Most of the words are kind of mumbled, which is why I never caught anything until I actually read the lyrics.

And I'm a privileged white bitch whose Mexican grandparents were pale enough and well-off enough to fit in when they came to America and made sure their kids wouldn't even have accents so this song helps alleviate my lifelong whiny guilt over that or something.

"Marta's Song" by Deep Forest seemed like some sort of catchy breakup song/mourning romance, instead it's about a girl whose clothes no longer fit well because she's actually pregnant, but she doesn't realize the reason.

I listened to this song called "Chance," by Savatage, a lot when I was a kid. Mostly because my dad really liked the song. He even rigged up our old shitty Mac (our first computer!) to play "TAKE A CHAAAAAAAANCE!" instead of the default computer noises.

I forgot about it completely for several years, then picked it back up recently... and I found out it was actually about one of my favorite historical figures! (Chiune Sugihara. Look him up!) That was really great to find out. It's a great song, and more people need to know about Chiune Sugihara anyway.

It was a good surprise :D
