Not-exactly-fandom secret

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is going to sound ridiculously egotistical, which is why it's a secret. I dream of being famous one day as an actress. But I'm worried that if I ever do, people might try to emulate my "style" (ego, right? Like I'm worth copying?) and there's this one accessory I always wear -- a black ring on my right middle finger. It's because I'm asexual. And I'll definitely make that known in interviews and such, but I'm worried that people would start wearing them because of me, without really caring what it means, and I'll have ruined the symbol...at least until the fad dies down, but still.

LOL.

Well, um, fantasies are fantasies, and hey, fantasies are always better when they have realistic touches and imperfections and "real life" worries attached to them.

Don't worry about it. By the time you "make it", you'll already have stopped wearing the ring.

not OP

But plenty of people wear the same piece of jewelry for years on end...?

Unless you mean that asexuality is a phase and she'll be over it by then, in which case, never mind.

And even assuming it's something she'll be "over," there's a chance that she would just keep wearing the ring because she was just used to it by then. Rings are like that for some people!

You should've just stopped there.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
But then we never would have known what it was that sounded so egotistical!?

I'm kind of curious why you'd like to be famous, though?

nayrt. My guess is: Egotistical.

Re: Not-exactly-fandom secret

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
If people started copying you to wear a right as a symbol of the asexuality, would that be okay? I mean, are you just worried about people copying without the meaning behind it, or you just want that ring all to yourself?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nonsense like this is the reason why I'm embarrassed to be asexual.

Seriously. As if we don't get enough ridicule already.

I'm still hoping that this was an attempt to start some asexual wank.

I dont get whats so embarassing about this? I saw it as OP doesnt want to make symbol into a fashion statement is she acheives her dreams, isnt that what it is?
Im not asexual so I dont know whats wrong with that.

Asexuals get a lot of flack for being special snowflakes, so stuff like this kind of contributes to the image. I mean, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be being famous or having an asexuality ring, but the combination of the two and this post being entirely unprompted is kind of eh.

This is a pretty lukewarm thing to get embarrassed about. You should hang out with tumblr aces if you really want something to be embarrassed by.

Ego aside, if people care enough about you to copy that, I don't see them copying it without caring about its meaning.

Tangentially-related

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of any asexual celebrities. At all. Of any kind.

I mean, I don't really follow celebrity gossip or anything, but this strikes me as strange anyway. :/

Re: Tangentially-related

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Being celebrities, they have other ways to draw attention to themselves and appear unique.

Not cool, man. Not cool.

Re: Tangentially-related

lol you set up the joke they gave the punchline

Most interviewers don't ask point blank what someone's sexuality is and coming out of the asexual closet isn't as much of a thing as is coming out of other sexuality closets.
