Wasn't the whole vulnerability his schtick before the wacky Pirates-y schtick? I think all his early movies had some type of this.

They do!
I have seen almost all of his older movies, that's why I was so surprised to find him that hot in Sleepy Hollow.
I guess it really has to do with this particular role that just combined everything I'm into into one delicious Johnny Depp character. The entire gothic theme of the movie probably did help as well.

It really stood out to me how Depp pulled off being frightened and vulnerable without being grating the way other such heroes usually are for me. Johnny Depp is really good at striking that balance.

Yes! Maybe I just like my male characters to act human instead of being either a stereotypically "manly" man or a total, laughable wuss.

He gets protected by a young powerless woman, faints, reacts normally to death and blood instead of going "bwahaha I'm an unafaid badass" and still ends up being heroic in the end *swoons* ;)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Depp in this movie is beautiful, hilarius, smart and fragile at the same time, and I don't think there are many actors who can pull off this combo with his elegance.

I ADORE Ichabod. Johnny Depp is my favorite, so I'm biased, but this was an awesome role & he did a fantastic job. I agree with your secret, OP.
