I don't think I understand. What's wrong with that? It's part of the appeal, and a big part of the Doctor's characterization in most of the new series.

So ... you want to like the show, but you don't like the premise? Or the main character?

Uh. Fair enough, then?

But that's like... the show.

I'm...not sure what you mean. By get past it, do you mean that the premise is too silly for you to enjoy it? It's fine if it is too silly for you, it's a silly show and there's plenty of other less silly shows you could watch instead, but, um, it's not something you "get past." It's part of the main appeal. People who like silly shows rarely like them in spite of their silliness, they like them at least partly because of it.

If you don't like that, the show is not for you. Stop trying.

Yeah, you pretty much summed up the entire show. I can't come with any argument of "But it's so much more than that!" to counter it because I don't think there is any. It's not that deep of a show. But it's still a fun show. A really, really fun show.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, individual episodes/serials sometimes go deeper, there've been some damn good sci-fi episodes over the years. But as a whole, yeah, this is pretty much the show.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Actually it is more than that. It's about five bazillion and eight things more than that. That's the reason the show inspires such a big fanbase -- because it's about everything. It's about everything you can possibly think of. Think of a theme, an idea, a feeling, an issue, an aspect of the human condition, and some episode or serial has tried it out. It touches on so many things, its scope is huge and its potential for always being more and building more and burrowing in more deeply is almost untappable, and that's why it's lasted so long and why it's so popular.

But all those things are fleeting, they belong to individual episodes/serials, and they're all enfolded into the premise. The premise isn't just one element among many. So if the premise is too silly for you, you're kind of screwed.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...Why is that something to "get past"? That's kind of like saying you want to get into watching The West Wing, if only you could get past the politics, or you want to try Supernatural, but you need to get past the whole "brothers fighting demons and monsters" bit.

Yeah, it seems a little strange - to like a show you have to like the premise at least a little. Maybe this person was introduced to it via Bakery AUs.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
OMG. Send me the Baker!Doctor links.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he saves the Earth a lot too, and there's monsters and aliens... so there's that.

I just amused at "magic alien thingy."

I just amused at "magic alien thingy."

To be fair, if you've seen one of the funnier regenerations or Ten's magical tinkerbell jesus thing against the Master, this isn't an unreasonable description.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's not something you need to get past to enjoy the show. It's something you need to embrace to enjoy the show.
manifold: Mistakes are proof that you are trying. (mistakes)

You'd be amazed what a flexible concept "magic alien thingy that gets lonely and sometimes picks up people to travel with so he won't be so lonely" actually is.

It can literally go ANYWHERE.

...sometimes that's a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually a fairly accurate description of the Doctor.
