It'd be interesting to do a survey of fans and see what percentage of Sterek fans dis/like Scott. ...because it seems the majority of Sterek fans dislike Scott.

Never said I didn't like Scott. I like him just fine. I was speaking in terms of shipping him with someone. I've read my share of Scott/Isaac fics, but don't actively ship them.

Also I don't know where this stereotype came from that Sterek shippers don't like Scott, but it's not true for me. They're not mutually exclusive concepts.

Perhaps not for you, but a lot of Sterek fans do seem to dislike Scott.

I think Sterek fans either ignore Scott, make him seem like an idiot (or pet) or actively hate him. You see it often - making Stiles out to be the hero; Stiles taking Scott's characteristics (Pack Mom; Little Red) or blaming Scott for making Derek sad. And just the simple giving Stiles and Derek free passes for being idiots, while Scott gets a level of hatred for doing similar things.

I've just seen that most of these things come from people who are Sterek fans. ...fandom survey would be interesting.

You know I see this come up a lot in the fandom but I've never actually seen all this "Scott hate" first hand. Just "a lot of Sterek fans do this" with no actual links or examples.

Sure a lot of fic ignores Scott or has Stiles take on some of his character traits, but I've never run into any actual hate or demonizing of his character.

You have a good point - I have seen Scott portrayed negatively, but keep in mind that most of those authors are probably the same ones who don't bother to watch the show. All three characters have flaws, have made mistakes and are far from perfect. Unfortunately fanon skews heavily in favor of Stiles and Derek.

You are probably true about the fans not watching the show (sad, but true). And I have heard that a lot of people just ship them from what they have seen on Tumblr. ...I can't imagine doing that, but hey, whatever works for people.

And I agree about characters and their flaws. I do *like* Stiles, but I like Stiles *because* of his flaws and issues. But shy away from trying to read meta and fic about him because it is so tied up in Sterek that I wouldn't know where to start.

I think canon also skews heavily into OOC interpretation of the characters - Scott becomes stupid; Stiles becomes pack mom and Derek's less-than-stellar qualities get swept under the carpet. ...I don't know, I've been out of the fandom since the last season finished, maybe it has gotten better.

I never could understand where this thought came from. Sterek fandom is fucking HUGE, of course there's some douches in the mix.

And naturally more than in your small ship because the numbers are bigger from the start with.

I think the stereotype comes from the fact that so many Sterek fics demonize Scott in order to get Stiles and Derek together. They make Scott abandon Stiles to something terrible, or turn his back on Stiles for something insignificant, or proclaim his hatred of Stiles because of Stiles' interest in Derek. It's a really, really common theme in Sterek fics. It's actually pretty rare to see Scott being supportive of Stiles in Sterek fics, which makes me sad because I don't see that characterization of Scott in canon.

It is baffling given the closeness of Scott and Stiles on the show. So much of the humour of the first season was based on the fact that Scott and Stiles are inseparable and like brothers. They are willing to do *anything* for each other.

...though it hasn't been helped by the show hinting that Issac will come between Scott and Stiles. Or the hinting that Stiles is feeling left-out (leading to woobie!Stiles by fandom).

I think you're right about Scott being supportive of Stiles. I think were the opposite comes from is that if Stiles and Derek ever got together at some point in the future, I'm not sure how supportive Scott would be in that case. Scott *really* doesn't like Derek and I don't think he'd want him anywhere near Stiles. So in that case yeah, I can see it. But the fics where Scott just turns his back on Stiles? I see the writers just doing that for dramatic purposes.

Well, to be fair, in canon Stiles really doesn't like Derek and vice versa. So if a decent writer can come up with fictional circumstances where that would drastically shift, I'd think they could do the same for Scott's animosity for Derek.

Yeeah, it might help if you didn't read badfics. (No, seriously, read the good fics and you don't see that.)

Other than the demonization of Scott, some of those fics have been very well-written fics. It's not just the badfics that do that. In fact, one memorable one had one of the best characterizations of both Derek and Stiles that I've seen in any Sterek fic, but the author also made Scott both stupid and cruel. So thanks for the condescension, but no, it's not just badfics that do this.
