Abandoned WIP's

(Anonymous) 2013-05-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
What are some reasons you've abandoned a fic?

I've only abandoned two fics, which I feel is a pretty good record (compared to dozens of started and completed ones.)

The first I dropped because the fan reaction was annoying me. I was trying to write a different take on a popular trope (the societal implications of A/B/O, specifically) and everyone just wanted the sex. >:| I suppose I could have turned comments off, but my inspiration was killed pretty quickly anyway, so I doubt it would have helped.

The second was an angsty story about these two friends who only ever had sex when drunk and the self-esteem issues/doubt that came with it. It got too angsty for me to actually finish, so I dropped it.

I'm never finishing either of these stories. When I do unfinished WIPs, I admit it. :)

Nope. :)

I was away at college when I started the fic. I was really excited about writing it as it was only the second thing longer than a oneshot I'd ever written. I was pumping out a lot of work on it, overflowing with ideas and researching. I had the whole thing planned out exactly where I wanted it to go.

Then I went home for a break and found my cat, whom I'd left in someone else's care was skinny, wheezing and looked to be in a lot of pain. The next day I woke up and found out she'd died in the middle of the night. It still upsets me badly.

Needless to say I completely forgot the fic for months, then when I remembered I couldn't help associating it with my cat's death so I decided to just abandon it. I haven't even responded to people's comments on the last chapter I posted.

I am the worst person when it comes to WiP. All of mine get abandoned because as soon as I post the first chapter, BOOM I'm out of the fandom. I don't know why that is but I feel awful about it. :<

I abandoned a few WiP of mine from when I first tired writing fic, I just couldn't finish them. I liked some of the ideas I had for them, but mostly I realized I was wracking by brain trying to come up with what I thought other people would like over time. I just got really burned out, and quit writing for while.

Now a days I try not to post any WiP before I've finished them. Then I post them slowly. There are only two I didn't do that with. One I posted before making my no posting WiP rule, an AU fantasy/horror/romance fic I'm very slowly working on. No reviews or anything on it, which admittedly bummed me out, but I just love the idea so much I really want to finish it. I've come up with some ridiculous world building ideas too, like Fairy Godmothers going from the traditional fairy tale version in the old days to a magical child protective service in modern times. The other, I finished a while ago, was a "What if" AU that was just supposed to be some pre-series ficlets based on the idea, but turned into a complete AU of the series.

Poor health. I have so many unfinished WIPs right now that went on hold because doing anything for longer than about half an hour besides concentrating on trying to relax my spastic muscles means I wind up in pain. And it takes me awhile to get into the writing zone, so half an hour doesn't cut it.

I managed to start AND finish a short little 4000 word thing the other day, though, so I'm optimistic that maybe I'll be able to get back to some of those WIPs soon.

Started writing this epic fic to distract from a.) screaming pain and b.) the fact that I might die.
Told everyone I dropped it because now that I'm not going to die, I don't want to go back into that headspace.
Really, without the drugs, I can't figure out what I thought was going on.

(I still write a shit-ton, in that fandom. Just...not that fic.)

- a BNF unanoned as the OP for the prompt, encouraging me to also unanon and share it on any of the fandom comms so more people could read it. I felt rather on the spot and stupidly panicked and bailed.

- I had a multi-chaptered fic that I had big ideas for (the drafts for future chapters are still on my hard drive), and then I realised the ideas were getting way out of hand and I'd probably write myself into a corner at some point.

- I fell out of love with the source material I just lost interest in the fic.

- I realised I was just writing snark about the fandom's fanon, and it was rather passive-aggressive and pretentious of me. Eurgh.

This is exactly why I only use socks or use fic/kink memes, and only post when I know I'm done. Because I suck, and no one must ever trace the suck back to me.

I try my very hardest not to ever outright abandon a posted fic, but the one time I did drop a fic after a few chapters knowing I would never return to it, it was because I was co-writing it with a friend and while we were both enthusiastic about it, we didn't have a coherent plot and time constraints made it impossible to cowrite. I didn't want to finish it without her, so I abandoned it.

The rest of my WIPs still update, although admittedly sometimes at a glacial pace.

Thankfully all of my abandoned fics (well, fic. There's only one abandoned fic I have) are personal ones that I keep in my desktop instad of on the net. I usually abandon them because:

1. I lack the drive.
2. I don't know how to plot the story anymore.

The fandom died and I knew that maybe three people tops would even be interested in seeing the WIP finished, so I just let it go and moved on. Now I've got a crossover WIP that I'm sure everyone thinks is abandoned (assuming anyone's even reading it), but which I'm going to start back on today.
