It's not the tenses or the point of view that make a story suck, it's bad storytelling. You can have crappy first person past tense, and conversely you can have truly amazing second person present tense stories (I read a horror fic that I would link to if I still had said link).

This. I don't understand why people hold to such absolutes - it's like they're fic fundamentalists somehow. "All things that I do not like are wrong and therefore cannot be good - amen!"
