I watched it recently for the first time. Thought season 1 was a bit dull, loved seasons 2, 3, and especially 4 (one of the most brilliant things to air on TV), 5 was a bit of a let-down. It's definitely worth it, but depressing as anything.

If you like it, and particularly Lester, I highly recommend Treme. Lots of the same actors, including that guy (playing a kind of similar character but with drastically different life experiences and ZOMG he's one of my favourite TV characters ever). It's also by David Simon and Eric Overmyer and also looks at the life and ecology of a city, in this case New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Largely POC cast, way more gender-balanced than The Wire. It has its bleak moments, given the subject matter, but I found it much more uplifting. The show hasn't ended yet, so I don't know whether anyone makes it out okay, but I imagine at least some of the characters do given the overall vibe.

Oh, and the best soundtrack of any show, ever. It's worth watching it just for that.

Huh. Okay, I think I'll put both of those on my 'try it and see' lists. Thank you!

And have patience. I watched S1 of The Wire years ago and in addition to not finding it exciting/substantially different than other police procedurals, I also found it pretty triggering. I returned to the show after years of friends nagging me to see it, and it was well worth it.

(Treme had me at hello, but that's also because the subject matter is more interesting to me.)

Enjoy!
