The Wire is the best show ever made, but it's definitely going to rip your heart out at least once per season (and in almost every single episode of season 4).

Getting that impression, yeah. Mind you, I've rolled with depressing before (usually in SF) if the characters are worth it. I just usually have to psych myself up some if I know in advance it's going to crush my heart.
