I guess I've been lucky because a lot of the recs I see are like this. They list the story and details, and then underneath in notes list what they liked about it. Admittedly some of the time there's just a general "this was cute", but for the most part there's enough of a note to give me a feel for why people are recing j(reccing? rec'ing?) the story.

I for one am not so great at recs because I'm not very good at pinpointing or articulating what exactly I liked about it. Words are often not my friend. But I try.

It's sometimes easier to do a reverse rec - Give people a theme and maybe what you are/aren't looking for and have them rec within those parameters. Back in SGA there was a genrefinders community where people would do this - I used to use the comm as a good fic finding resource. Something like that would be handy for every fandom.

my problem is that those rec lists are usually 99.9% Sterek.

And I don't mind them, but they are not my TW OTP (I know, swimming uphill and all that).

That is a definite problem.

I never went into this trying to break away from the popular ship. It just happened.

Well I am beginning to feel your pain. As I said somewhere else tonight, I'm burnt out on Sterek (I like reading it but don't ship it in canon anyhow) and have started to look for anything else. Slim pickings.

What's your OTP?

Chris/Peter. Like, they have had even less interaction on the show than Derek and Stiles, but no one really knows their backstory and it's feasible that they had something going on pre-show, right*?

*no, I don't care. They're both incredibly hot actors. I'm shallow.

I also love the idea of Finstock/Greenberg for funsies.

Peter/Stiles is starting to creep up on me, as is Lydia/Chris.

But Chris/Peter is definitely it for me. There are a lot of good fics on AO3 that run the gamut from pre-series to futurefic.

I could totally get behind Chris/Peter pairing. I'll have to check the tags next time I head to AO3.

Sidenote: I have had a love for JR Bourne since he was Martouf on Stargate. Martouf was my favorite ever on that show. I was so excited to see him in TW but so sad to see him being a Bad Guy (which he is admittedly amazing at). I really want him to turn around so I can looooove him.

Anon here to argue semantics about Chris being the "bad guy".

I see Chris as the antagonist, but I don't think he's awful. He's often actively working against the protagonist, but I don't think the show is always 100% behind the protagonist or told completely 100% from Scott's point of view.

I didn't really have a point here other than to say that I love Chris and quite enjoy Bourne's portrayal of the character. I guess I just don't see lumping him in with characters like Peter, Gerard, Kate, or Matt, all of whom I would classify as "bad guy[s]".

Oh I was definitely over simplifying his character, for sure. And I really don't lump him in with Gerard or Kate. I do enjoy his portrayal and think he brings a lot to the character, but for me right now he's not a very sympathetic character. He's just....I see Hunters as basically being a group like the KKK. He's mean and racist and picks on Derek and werewolves for no other reason than what they are. And while that's great for creating drama and storytelling it doesn't make me particularly sympathetic to him.

I've seen a few meta bits about people hoping the third season is where the Chris pulls back and really starts to question his upbringing and the whole "Hunter" thing. Which I'm hoping is true as it would make for interesting character development.
