Bitter Old Fandom Hag

(Anonymous) 2013-05-04 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Two facts

1. I ship all the time. Constantly. Passionately.

2. I have never had a ship become canon.

Anyone else in the same boat? Right now I have an easy dozen pairings I adore in my head that are never going anywhere. There should be a consolation prize. A mug or something, idk. Boo hiss. :(

I'm in the same boat. Except
I DON'T SHIP
and it never becomes canon.

Yep. I mean, I also never want it to become canon, since I consider canon and fandom two separate things. :) But yes. Never happened.

It's not that I don't love my fandom stuff. But on a very shallow level, I'm starting to feel like after ten years of faithfully doing the fandom thing I'm owed one actual sex scene without it compromising my principles. ;)

I was like this, and then I started watching Bollywood films. Much higher ship/canon ratio... although my favorite Bollywood ship still ends (begins?) with one side of it dying horribly. *cries*

Aww chin up, anon. That can't be a pattern that'd go on forever.

Most of the time I ship something because it's canon (I mean, canon ships will have the most chemistry, right?) so no, not quite in the same boat. And even if I do ship something not canon, I rarely actually want it to happen.

My current OTP is so canon, they've been in over half a dozen books, and the only thing they haven't done yet is make my OT3 canon. My OT3 will never be canon, but at least they interact like they are all the freaking time, so I'm on cloud nine rn, really.

yeah, although now i'm just horribly bitter about there still never being much queer media that doesn't make me cringe in general

I don't know, man. Sometimes I want the ships I like to become canon, but since most of what I ship is slash I know it's highly unlikely, and that even if canon did go there I wouldn't like how they did it.

But I've gotten my own consolation prizes. Shows that cater to my ship plenty with lots of interaction and fondness and really great fandoms. That's all I really need.

...Isn't this basically every slash fan ever, unless they watched Torchwood?

Huh. I definitely ship a lot of things... but I don't really want them to become canon. Because there's always the risk the writers will screw it up, or it will become less interesting once the two characters are together.

That and I like it when there's a barrier between canon and fandom - I always cringe when fandom starts to intrude on reality, like when the actors or writers find fanfic of themselves. So much second-hand embarassment.

But on the other hand... there has been an instance when one of my OTPs actually got together in canon (or at least, it was pretty heavily implied that way!), and I was pretty happy with that.

Ships not becoming canon doesn't ruin my enjoyment of media, since that's kinda the whole point of fanfiction for me - writing "what ifs" and adding to the canon.

I'm more bitter about things like lack of representation & variety, and tired old tropes & cliches being rolled out. But that's something that's always going to happen, I guess.

Kinda in the same boat, except I don't really care they've never become canon (I'm a sit in my corner of the sandbox and enjoy what I enjoy and fuck everyone else's opinion or if it's canon or what, I'm having fun!)

...Sort of...? The ships I usually really, really adore never become canon - but the ones I'm kind of 'Eh, they're alright. I like 'em well enough' are usually canon at that point so...Yeah. Kinda.

ONE of my ships recently became canon. I made a secret about it here and everyone bashed it. Such fun.
