(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 05:58 am (UTC)(link)One person said she was being sexist, and S-S said that they weren't going to listen to that person because they insulted S-S and they needed to apologize.
Several people pointed out that she normally had good comments, what she said was a bit sexist, and her going off and demanding an apology was a Bit Not Good.

at which point S-S said
"I was speaking as their roles as love interests, which is what they exist to be, quite frankly. Peggy was window dressing. She was there to be pretty and for there to be a romance in the movie. They gave her some token roles to fulfill so she had a reason to be there, but otherwise she served no purpose.
Oh, except that incredibly dull and completely unconvincing scene where we're supposed to believe she saves him from despair after Bucky's death.
Thing is, Cap doesn't need a love interest. He's already perfect, and he's already grounded in reality. Superman needs Lois as a symbol of humanity. Tony needs Pepper (in the movie) as his only connection to humanity. The Hulk needs Betty as his connection to his own humanity. Which isn't to say that love interests need to work on some sort of grand scale--Spider-Man's love interests are apt because he's supposed to be a really regular guy who learned a lesson and has superpowers. Batman's love interests are not meant to be pursued (usually), but resisted. The X-Men are basically a big soap opera, so love interests and romances abound as an important part of their identity.
But what does Cap really need a love interest (like Peggy) for? He's already practically a saint. He's already a humble, kind, generous guy. A love interest like Peggy doesn't tell you anything new about his character. Doesn't provide anything except for someone for him to have feelings for. He's not tempted by her (their romance is sweet), he's not changed by her, he's not really anything for her.
Peggy is absolutely window dressing."
and it utterly devolved from there, at which point S-S flounced.

Otherwise what she was saying seemed like a valid criticism of the way love interests are slated to function, because:
I don't mean they need a love interest. I mean that a LI needs to fulfill some kind of role that works for the story. Peggy fulfills no role, hence "window dressing". She doesn't feel important to the story, his character, the themes, etc. She was there to help fulfill an imaginary checklist required of all superhero movies.
Sorry I clarify the Lois thing elsewhere: "It makes sense for Superman to have Lois, because Superman is already a humble guy with godlike powers. Lois helps him keep in touch with that human nature". That is the role she fills.
This is basically true, sadly enough, and in one of her earlier comments it seemed like she didn't necessarily like the fact. I don't either, and I hate how a lot of superhero movies do write their female characters and drive romance into them.
It's just the "I demand an apology" crap that really took a left turn at albuquerque.
